beth Smartt, who was in Eugene
Saturday with personal greetings
of the League's newly-elected
president, Dr. Margaret Seebree.
Miss Smartt. who is chairman of
the membership committee of the
league, is attending the Women's
Christian Temperance Union con
vention in Portland this week. She
is legal counsel for the WCTU, be
sides being a lecturer and writer.
Eugene Pen Women gathered at
the home of Mrs. C. C. McCornack,
state president of the league, on
Saturday for luncheon and a busi
ness meeting. The luncheon also
honored Mrs. Pearl Gischler, new
est member, and Miss Louise Fitch,
back from an assignment with the
Reader's Digest.
Miss Smartt is present owner of
one of the oldest newspapers in the
United States, a paper originally
called the Northern Centinel (they
spelled it with a C), later 'the
Washington County Post, which is
still published at Cambridge, New
York.
Plaid is the big news for fall.

The bride wore a turquoise
gown and the flowers used in
decoration of the home were in
turquoise and white. The couple
will live at Winchester Bay.

ence maze were initiated into
Royal Neighbors of America at
a recent meeting in Knights of
Pythias Hall attended by about
fifty members. A corsage was pre
sented to District Deputy Mabel
Milne and a drape was placed over
the charter in memory of the late
Henry Tuyman.
Plans for the October meeting
were considered. It was decided
to invite other camps and that
costumes should be worn by all.
Mrs. Van Tibbetts is chairman of
the entertainment and decorations
committee.
Refreshments were served by a
committee headed by Mr. and
Mrs. Lester Read.
