be offered an insurance program
to cover bodily injuries,

Late summer views of the Milky
Way are the best of the year.
Far from uniform throughout,
this galaxy breaks into many ir
regularities of nebulous light of
varying width and brightness.
Overhead it divides into two dis
tinct branches which continue side
by side toward the south.
In classical mythology this sky
band was considered the dust
tial billows in the rich regions of
the south.
He wrote that "the stars piled
up in great cumulus masses like
summer clouds. They appeared
very bright as if an illumination
far greater than the Milky Way
was shining through."

To some it was a highway to
heaven, a heavenly river, or
lights held by spirits. One ancient
scientist thought it was a zone
of stars partially obscured by the
earth s shadow; another, that stars

that they illuminate each other.
Theophrastus taught that this
was a crack in the sky due to poor
joining of the two hemispheres at
the time of creation. The noted
Aristotle considered it a mass of
glowing gas. The Greek Pytha
goras around 550 B. C. taught it
was a vast assemblage of very dis
tant stars.
Pythagoras Right
Galileo in 1610 found that the
Pythagorean theory, propounded
over 2000 years earlier, was cor
rect. His newly-invented telescope
showed the Milky Way as "my
riads of stars, their blended light
causing the white effect the un
aided eye reveals." It is "star
dust," each fleck too distant to
show individually.
The galaxy completely encir
cles the sky. Our star system of
billions of blazing suns is thought :
to be arranged in the shape of a
disc. Our sun and Its planets are
about half way from the center to
the edge.
More On Edges
If we look skyward in the direc
tion of the thin part of the disc,
we do not see as many or as dis
tant stars as when we look toward
the edges. They aren't there. The
accumulated effect of these mil
lions of far-away stars in the di
rection of' the disc's edges gives
the appearance of the Milky Way.
