Planes Here to Stay
Mr. Montee, who ii entitled to
a prejudice if anyone Is, believes
that aviation is here to stay. He
does contend, though, that the
CAA and other agencies should
tighten up on regulations and not
let anybody leave the good earth
unless he has a two-way radio
aboard.
His ambition now Is to sit at
the controls of a jet plane and
blitz through the air at 600 or so
miles an hour.
"They won't let me thounh."
he said. "The army owns 'em and
civilians can't fly 'em."
His other regret is that his wife
won't go up with him.
"She doesn't think I've had
enough experience," he said.
Iceland to Have Trees
Norwegians Decide
CHICAGO (UP) Many trees
will grow in Iceland if an experi
ment conducted By Norwegian
geologists proves successful.
American Overseas Air Lines
flew 65,000 tree plants from an
airport near Andselv, Norway, to
Keflavik, Iceland, in a project to
develop great pine forests on the
Ice-bound island.
Once, valuable woodlands thriv
ed on Iceland, geologists believe.
But today the land is barren. Ha
ken Bjarnason, forestry director,
will try to restore the lost forests
with specially-developed pine and
fir plants.

Atheists Query
Radio Control
WASHINGTON (U.R) The
Federal Communications Commis
sion has been asked whether radio
stations have to give atheists a
chance to reply every time they
broadcast a religious program.
The ruling is sought by the Re
ligious Radio Assn. which in
cludes Protestants, Catholics and
Jews.
In a 1946 decision, the commis
sion held that not every organ!'
zation is of itself entitled to time
on the air. But it said that "an
organization or idea may be pro
jected into the realm of contro
versy by virtue of being attacked
The holders of a belief should not
be denied the right to answer at'
tacks upon them or their belief
solely because they are few in
number."
Edward J. Heffron, association
president, said members of the Re
ligious Radio Assn. fear that
broadcasters might interpret this
language to mean they must give
atheists an opportunity to reply
to every single church program.
Such a move, he said, might make
broadcasters shy away from re
ligious programs altogether.

Legion 40 and 8
Ponders Status
Of Bunyan Chin
TACOMA 04 Did or did not
Paul Bunyan wear whiskers?
This is a question now perplex
ing members of the 40 and 8, the
fun making organization of the
American Legion.
This outfit is making prepara
tions to entertain the state de-
partment Legion convention here
next week, and they plan a giant
Paul Bunyan and his blue ox
"Babe" in the Thursday parade,
When it came to assembling the
giant the question of whiskers
arose and every available source1
of information was sought to find
out did he or did he not have
them. Libraries were searched,
lumbermen were queried and a
telegram was even sent Bemidji,
Minn., where a huge statue of
the fabled lumberman stands, but
no one seemed to know for a fact.
Of course; it is known that Paul
Bunyan shaved at times with one
of his huge axes, but did he wear
a beard or how about a mous
tache?
Forty and 8 members hope to
show the world whiskers or no
whiskers when the giant appears
on the streets that is, if they
themselves find out in time.

He said that despite the forma
tion of about 30 weed control dis
tricts In recent years the state's
number one farm problem still
is weeds.
We probably will never have
one control that will wipe out
weeds, either by cultivation or by
chemicals," he said ln discussing
effects of 2,4-D, dinitro and other
chemicals. "Like other pests weeds
will have to be fought by repeated
operations."
He said that selective sprays,
such as 2,4-0, have increased con
trol of annual weeds in the crops
in recent years. "You hear a lot
about noxious, perennial weeds
but the annual weeds growing in
crops probably cost the farmer
more than the noxious weeds," he
added,
Visitors were inspecting plots
of Canada thistle, the state's chief
noxious weed, morning glory and
plots showing selective control of
annual weeds in several grains
and grasses.
New England Also Has
Good Neighbor Policy
BOSTON (UP) The neigh-

demonstrated daily by a little

Pilot boats cruise off Boston

their crews usually remain out of

So each day the crew of an ex

pilot boat and leave a day's reading.
