Edward Geary, 20, Drain, was
reported ilightly improved though

by his physician. Geary was in
jured Monday In a logging acci
dent near Drain.
A volunteer fir erew and truck
from Mahlon Sweet Airport put
out a fire in a farmer's field near
by and prevented it from spread
ing to an adjoining stand of bar
ley. The Irving Fire Department
helped to put out the blaze which
occurred about 4 p. m. and burn'
ed off S or 6 acres of straw and
chaff.
Omaha Woodmen will present a
program starting at 8:30 p. m. Sat,
urday in the Springfield VFW
Hall. All members of VFW Post
3965, Springfield, and all Wood
men's Circle members and their
families are invited to attend free
The program will include boxing.
wrestling, the Eugene VLT troupe,
and dancing from 10 to 12.
Lane County poultrymen will
picnic Aug. 29 at Benton-Lane
Park. Lunch will be at 12:30 p. m.

Highway Crash
Injures Driver
James O'Dewell, thought to be
from Monroe, was admitted to
Sacred Heart Hospital Friday
morning suffering from injuries
received when his car overturned
and was completely wrecked by
fire about two and one half miles
north of Junction City on Highway
99 North. Re reportedly sustained
internal and back injuries'
The hospital reported his condi
tion as satisfactory although ex
tent of his injuries could not be
learned at press time. State police
reported his car hit a telephone
pole, slid in loose gravel and
turned over at a curve. O'Dewell
A young married couple, Mr. and was dazed and unable to talk

a half day elsewhere before coming

gorse. The county is participating
in experimental work toward the
elimination and control of the
thorny yellow-blossomed bush
which is sometimes mistaken for
scotch broom.

Lost From Trailer
Loss of a trunk and a wicker
clothes hamper from a trailer
while he was driving from Oak
ridge to Eugene July 27 was re
ported this week by H. R- Mac-
Kellar of Vancouver, Wash.
The loss was first noted upon
arrival in Eugene, when MacKel
lar discovered the side of his trail
er was sprung and the remainder
of the load was slipping. He drove
on to Vancouver.
A "reasonable" reward is of
fered for the return of the missing
belongings.

Due to Heart Attack

Sunday, deputy coroner Fled Buell
reported Friday following an
autopsy to determine cause of
death.
Peterson, a painter and insur
ance man, was found dead Sunday
night in the bathroom of the
apartment house in which he lived-

Woman Hospitalized
Following Accident
Miss Ourinne Hlxson, Brockway,
Ore., was in Eugene Hospital after
an accident early Friday five miles
south of Junction City on Highway
99. She was reported suffering
from superficial cuts and bruises.
State police reported that the
car Miss Hixson was ariving
struck the car driven by Catherine
Jane Wiebe of Puente, Calif., from
the rear, knocking it into the
ditch. Little damage was reported
for either car.
Mr- and Mrs. George Williams
were passengers in the Wiebe car.
Mrs. Williams was taken to Eu
gene Hospital by Arrow Ambu
lance, was treated for minor
bruises, and later released. !

Fields Recovering
From Maior Ooeration
Long-time West Coast Lumber
men's Assn. assistant in Eugene,
R. C. Fields, Is recovering follow
ing a major operation in the Port
land Veteran's Hospital.
Injuries incurred in the South
Pacific when his destroyer was
sunk by enemy action had given
Fields considerable trouble in re
cent months and he was taken to
the hospital July 21.
Prior to joining the West Coast
Lumbermens' Assn. Fields served
nearly 17 years in the Navy. He
is chief assistant to Herb Cox, sec
retary manager of the WCLA.
Flock to Buy
Zealous stamp collectors In the
Eugene area had purchased almost
7000 William Allen White com
memorative stamps from the post
office Friday, not long after they
became available.
Acting Postmaster Ethan New
man commented that "there must
be hundreds" of ardent stamp col
lectors In this area. He said most
collectors buy the commemorative
stamps by the sheet as an invest
ment. The pre-war national park
commemorative stamps, he noted,
have increased in value from three
to five cents each.
The postoffice received 20,000
stamps commemorating 100 years
of progress by women In the
United States. The Oregon cen
tennial stamp will be available
here late in the month.

Welsh has been off the job while
Nellie Blanche Anderson
Nellie Blanche Anderson, 69,
Corvallis, died at a local hospital
Thursday. A resident of Corvallis
for the past 34 years, she was born
at Aurora, Neb. on Nov. 5, 1878.
She married Dr. Charles O. An
derson in Iowa in 1898. Her hus
band died in Corvallis in 1942.
Since that time she had made her
home in Eugene and Corvallis.
She was a member of the Pres
byterian Church of Brownsville;
a charter member of the Ladles
of the Moose of Corvallis; a
member of the Phytian Sisters and
the American Legion auxiliary at
Corvallis.
She is survived by two sons,
Raymond of Portland and Dr.
Charles O. Anderson, Jr. of Cor
vallis; two daughters, Mrs. Irene
Cassaway, Junction City, and Mrs.
Doris Scholz, Eugene; one broth
er, Mark Howard of O'Neil, Neb,
two sisters, Mrs. Laura Walker,
Page, Neb. and Mrs. Florence
Tucker, Central City, Neb.; seven
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at the
Warner-McHenry Funeral Home
at Corvallis at 2 p.m. with Rev.
Charles S. Neville officiating. In
terment will be in the Masonic
Cemetery.
George W. Hofsess
Funeral services will be Satur
day at First Christian Church at
2:30 p.m. for George W. Hofsess.
Rev. Leland Morgan will officiate,
assisted by Rev. Frank L. Cook.
Interment will be in West Lawn
Memorial Cemetery. Simon
Lounsbury Chapel is In charge of
arrangements.

Man Reports Wife
Missing Since Aug. 4
R. H. Welsh, general delivery,
Coos Bay, said Thursday that his
wife Grayce Lucille, 30, has not
been heard from since leaving
Coos Bay on a bus Aug. 4.
Fearing foul play, Welsh notified
state police after checking all bus
stops between Coos Bay and Eu
gene. The woman's baggage is in the
Eugene Greyhound station. Welsh
said he put her on the Eugene bus
himself and watched the bus leave
the North Bend station with her-
He said his wife, who has reddish-brown
hair, was wearing a
diamond ring and had about $150
cash with her. He fears that
someone she met enroute may
