Here is a brief picture of some
of the added items the budget
committee felt, were minimum
needs in each department under
the general fund.
General Control No personnel
increases but $2150 budgeted for
purchase of additional land for
the new city hall; $3750 tor three
more traffic lights on Main St.,
tentatively slated for Second, Sev
enth and Fourteenth St. Intersec
tions; $2400 for an engineering
survey of the city's water supply
and' system now operated by
Mountain States Power Co., with
an eye to possible municipal own
ership. There are also slightly in
creased operating costs due to ex
pected occupancy of the new city
hall the latter half of fiscal year.
Fire Protection Fire depart
ment will have total personnel of
nine men including fire chief In
stead of six provided under pres
ent budget. This is part of pro
gram to meet requirements of
Oregon Insurance Rating Bureau
so the city can retain present fire
insurance rates. Provisions are
also made for increasing the vo
lunteer firemen from 17 to 24 men,
as part of the rating bureau re
quirements. Under capital outlay
m the fire department budget, b
utility vehicle to be used by the
fire chief for inspection service
and for fire clean-up work is pro
vided.
Police Protection, Police de
partment personnel is increased
from eight to 11 men including
the police chief. The budget com
mittee decided the increase was
necessary because of the larger
area of the city to cover and also
the committee had to consider oc
cupation of the new city hall
which will require a desk sergeant
on duty 24 hours to provide a
jail guard.
Building Inspection The bud
get committee added an assistant
building inspector to the depart
ment because they felt one man
could not cover the larger city
area adequately and at thesame
time provide more efficient build
ing construction counseling. Un
der capital outlay in this depart
ment, a pick-up truck is budgeted.
This vehicle will serve a two-told
purpose by use in both building
inspection and engineering depart
ments for utility and equipment
purposes.
Public Library The librarian's
salary is Increased form $900 to
$1200 and a library helper Is pro
vided. Unaer capital outlay, $720
is budgeted for purchase of read
ing material.
To keep pace with larger oper
ations the emergency fund is in
creased $1000 over the current
budget figure.
Registered voters in the city
will be asked to pass on a request
of the budget committee to ex
ceed the statutory six per cent' li
mitation Tuesday June 15 in what
may prove to be of the most im
portant special elecflons in the
city's history.

left Eugene Saturday for Kitson
Springs where he said he would
"stay as long a a; necessary to get
rid of the flu."'
The judge- hw been suffering
from lung congestion but had con
tinued to maintain his office hours
in the courthouse until Saturday.
Commissioner Allen Wheeler is
expected to return from Los An
geles Mondar. He has been at
tending the International Kiwanis
Convention 'there during the past
week.
