pelled Army barge, believed to
have nine crew members aboard,
sent its own urgent distress call
Tuesday after apparently, hitting
a small island south of the Alaska
Pcnnlnsula while en route to the
rescue of crewmen of another
grounded ship.
District Coast Guard headquar
ters announced the 86-foot BSP
1927 (barge, self-propelled) had
radioed that it was sinking about
40 miles southwest of Cold Bay,
which is near the end of the Alas
ka Penninsula.
The message, received In Ketch
ikan and relayed here, said it was
on Phln Point, In the Deer Island
vicinity. The Coast Guard report
ed the Cutter Cedar had been di
diverted to the barge's aid from Its
rescue mission to the Aleutian
Mall, which grounded early Mon
day on the southwest tip of Uni
mak Island, the first In the Aleu
tian chain.

Tuesday, 2-5 p.m. in the home
economics room at the union high

ton, Tex., to Boston, plowed into
a grove of trees on the Maryland
side of the Potomac River a few
miles from the National Airport

Eastern Airlines said the cause had
not been determined, adding that
the pilot checked In by radio at
4:27 a. m. EST. but failed to make
contact with the airport control
later as scheduled.
The dead were three passen
gers, the pilot and co-pilot. Three
injured passengers and the flight
attendant were taken to casualty
hospital In Washington.

The Air Forces announced
Tuesday that the rocket-powered
sleds have streaked along a set
of railroad tracks faster than a
bullet, beating the airplane to the
honor of cracking the sonic wall.
The air force said it used Jet
bomb launching sleds for the ex
periment. They were clamped to
tracks 2,000 feet long over which
they skated at speeds over 1,000
miles an hour.
In the first high speed run on
Sept. 20, 1946, the unmanned sled
flashed the distance of the track
in less than two seconds. When
it hit the end of the rails, the sled
hurtled out across the desert until ; the Masonic Hall Tuesday, Jan
it came to rest. .

sewer extension. It will run from

dock residence along First street to
the west side of Quincy Street
and north to Sixth.

water level in this section the gap
through the airport was closed
