A collection of uniaue photo
graphic material has been received
by the department of special col
lections in the University of Ore
gon library, according to Dr. R. C.
Swank, librarian.
The collection, donated by C. F.
Huntington of Orovllle, Calif., is
a comD ation or Huntington s tatn-
er, Charles J. Huntington, an itin
erant photographer who main
tained headquarters In Olympia,
Wash., from 1887 to 1878.
The elder Huntington came to
Washington Territory from Minne
sota and Illinois. In his early days,
he was among the first photogra
phers to reach and photograph
Chicago after the great fire of
1871.
The collection presented to the
library includes the only known
negatives of the Chicago fire. Itj
also includes an interesting group
of stereoscopic views of Washing
ton Territory. The negatives are of
the wet-plate type which were
outdated half a century ago.
An old tintype and some news
paper clippings constitute the re
mainder of the collection.
Particularly interested in old
photographs, the library is glad
to hear from people who own
such materials, librarians say.
