Brethren Church is presenting its
Christmas program at the church
Sunday, 7:30 p. m., and extends an
invitation to the public. The pro
gram will Include the singing of
carols, recitations by the various
Sunday school classes, a 'tableau
and offeratory.
Florence schools will observe
the holidays from Dec. 19 to Jan.

Florence Public library will be
closed until Tuesday, Jan. 5, an
nounces Mrs. L. Bresney, libra
rian. With the start of the new
year, a new schedule of library
days and hours will be arranged
and announced. Several new assis
tants will be on the staff.

George Hocker, who operates
the HI-Way meat market, is re
covering from a serious illness and
was greatly cheered by the visit;
of his brother V. W. Hocker, B:
4 R refrigeration owner in Tul
sa, Okla., who flew here upon
learning of his brother's illness,
and returned to Tulsa only because
of urgent business. The visiting
brother was greatly impressed
with Florence and its people and
contemplates selling out and re
turning here. Harold Anderson, an
old friend of the Hookers, ex
perienced meat man from Los An
geles is here to assist Mrs. King,
who has been carrying on the mar
ket during the emergency.
Arriving at the C. J. Morgan
home Sunday to spend the holi
days are their daughter Carolyn
Jean and heir nephew Fred Chan
dler of Portland. Other members
of the family coming from Port
land later will be Albert Chan
dlers and William Blairs.
Mrs. Mildred Waldo, third grade
teacher has been, granted a leave
of absence and will attend col
lege the remainder of the year.
The Clinton Carlsons have sold o
portion of their farm In Grant's
Canyon to R. D. Croslar. The Carl
son home Is included in the sale,
and will be torn down, and the
lumber used toward the building
of a new home for the Corsairs.
Carlsons will also build a new
homo. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Funk
have returned from visiting his
sister in Klamath Falls.

go to Washington to spend Christ
mas with the Vernon StonefieldF.

The Hayden Bridge work, call
ing for( excavation of 30,000 cubic
yards of earth and 15,000 cubic
yards of rock, will be the start on
a project not expected to be com
pleted until 1949. However, if di
rectors of the water board let the
contract for the excavating, it is
likely that this initial Job will be
undertaken almost immediately.
The total cost of the new filter
plant Has been estimated at
$1,000,000. Watei from the plant
will be carried to Eugene through
a $500,000 pipeline, sections of
which have already been laid.
The budget to be checked by
the board's directors Monday
night is not a formal statement of
revenues and planned expenses in
