sems to be some suspicion that
Britain is presenting her rafged
side to us while actually using
our help to compete with us m
world markets.
Important u Ally
In some ways, when we help
Britain it is heiping a competitor,
but in an overwhelmingly more
i important way we are bolstering
our greatest ally. And as a mat
ter of fact the production figures
do not mean that Britain's posi
tion is less stringent than repre
sented. Britain never lived on exports
alone. It used to be that about
naif her income came from in
vestments abroad, from her posi
tion as the world's greatest bank
er and insurance dealer, and
from the vast services such as
shipping which she provided for
other nations. In those days her
export were expected to bring
in only half of the income needed
to pay for her heavy imports of
food and raw materials.
Bad Trade Balance
In order to conduct the war,
Britain had to liquidate a vast
proportion of her investments
abroad. Even that was insuffi
cient. Year after year, to obtain
war materials, she ran up an un
favorable trade balance. Former
profits from trade with such
countries as India and Egypt be
came deficits. For example, she
wound up owing some $5,000,000,
000 to India alone. Her shipping
industry was torn to shreds.
But to get back to why Britain
really needs help regardless of
record production, one has to re
member that overall picture of
reduced British investments
abroad. With prices for the things
she must import far above pre
war levels, Britain will not be
able to balance her export and
import books until her production
is about 75 per cent above pre
war normal. Until then, Britain
as an ally and customer far over
shadows her prospects as a future
competitor.

Most women in the United
States don't like the new long
skirts but they'll wear them any
way to keep from "looking funny."
A survey of women in 13 cit:es
showed that only one woman in
four approved calf-length skirts.
But nearly two out of every three
planned to wear them. j
Many of the women were con-i
vinced that the new fashion wasi
dreamed up by clothing manufac-;
hirers attempting to create an(
artificial demand for their prod-
uct.
But Ruth Hatfield. Chicago
fashion designer, said such an
opinion was "nonsense." (
"If enough women decide they
don't want their skirts real long,
manufacturers will give them
whatever they do want," she said.
"It is sheer nonsense to think
that a designer can get in an ivory
tower and dictate what the public
wants. If the public rejects long
skirts, manufacturers will change
in a big hurry."
But in spite of designers' insist-!
ence that the American woman
wants the new style, the women;
themselves continue to vote
against it.

A series of instructional meet
ings got under way in Caldwell.
Payette and Weiser under the di
rection of Mrs. Leo J. Falk. state
adviser of women's activities for
the foundation. A similar meeting,
open to the public, was held at
Donnelly Wednesday night. Polio
has been prevelant in those com
munities. Other meetings will be
held at Moscow Aug. 28 and
Lewiston Aug. 29.

to the Register-Guard office
