ing m the Eugene Hotel with a
history of Chinese Ideographs and
their evolution and combination
Into a written, stylized language. 1
Using a blackboard for illustra- :
sev
eral of the simple "radicals"
signs used either by themselves
or as combining forms to make
more complex words and ideas.
Then he showed how to compound
the signs.
Picture Influence
Part of the picturesqueness of
the Oriental languages, he pointed
out, comes from the picture base
of their spoken tongue. "For in
stance," he said, "the verb Ho see'
it written by drawing the symbol
for an eye and then attaching legs
to it to give the idea of the eye
going somewhere."
As another illustration he drew
the two symbols for "to stand"
and "center," which together
mean "neutrality."
He capped his talk with the in
formation that the Japanese sym
bol for the United States is the
combination of "rice" and "coun
try." "They explain this," he said,
"by saying that the United States
is a very rich country, and since
to them rice is the basis for riches,
our country is known to them as
Rice Country."
Lion First Vice-President Dr. A.
T. Oberg presented Lion A. L.
Hawn with a badge signifying 10
years of perfect attendance. Lion
