Morse was objecting to the'

aid the county in prevening the
construction of the grade crossing. I
The War Department Engineers,
however, to back up the county's

Meeting Held
SPRINGFIELD City Attorney
William S. Fort returned here
Thursday after attending a con
ference with the State Highway
Commission in Salem Wednesday
to discuss disposition of the $250,
000 fund set up by the 1947 Legis
lature to be used in cities that
have experienced damage to
streets by heavy industrial traffic.
Fort was one of three men se
lected by the League of Oregon
Cities to cNjsult with the high
way commission on this problem.
The other, were Fred Inkster of
Oswego and Hollis Smith, mayor
of Dallas.
"Fort said the highway commis
sion will expend the special fund
and must use the money on city's
street other than those main
tained by the State Highway De
partment. Fort said the highway commis-'
sion felt that the intent of the
statute was mainly to aid smaller
cities which have recently had
rapid industrial growth and are
not in a position financially to
keep heavily used streets in shape.
He said cities will be required
to show the highway commission
their specific needs within the
meaning of the statute. The board
of three may meet again with the
highway commission at a later
date.

Ex-Kansan Tells Rt F
Where Corn Really Good
He used to live in Kansas where
it really grows tall, so Frank O.
McDonald of Rt 5 feels he's a good
judge of corn. And in Lane County
it's the Rt 5 variety, down around
Veneta, that takes the honors, Mc
Donald avers.
Rt. 5 has it ten and a half feet
tall by the acre, with three ears
to the stalk. Rt. F can shush up
about its corn raising prowess, Mc
Donald says, because Rt. 5 is a
little Kansas.
