ferrals to bean fields Monday
morning, but most of the esti
mated 150 persons who applied
were destined to wait until the
bean crop la more fully matured

Assistant Kenneth Arney said oth
er growers are waiting to learn
how many pickers will drive to
the fields, before making provi
sions to haul the pickers from tha
city.
"We don't want proapactlva
bean pickers to become discour
aged," said Arney, pointing out
that the crop is late and picking
will not be In full swing until
about August 1. The 150 who ap
plied for work Monday Included
both local persona and transients.

Children's Platoon No. 1 will
leave the Irlsh-Swartr parking
lot at Tenth Ave. and Charnelton
St. at 7 a. m. Tuesday. Tha first
platoon wilt pick at the Fred
Kingsley farm In the Norkenile
District. Other platoons will not
start picking until lata this week
or early next week.
Meantime, registration was un
der way at Coburg Farm Labor
Camp, which will open July 25.
The camp Is for families only, and
for bean pickers only. Tents and
cabins owned by the growers sra
rapidly filling up, but several good
camping sites still are available
for persons who have their own
tents.
Other types of farm work, aside
from bean picklnf. are at a min
imum. Only a few persons are
being referred to farms for beet
pulling, picklnf cucumbers, haying
and combining. ,

SEWARD. Alaska l The
Kensi Peninsula forest fire which
has consumed 400.000 acres of
timber waa within 25 miles of
Seward Monday.
