Mike Moriarty has tendered to
the county court his resignation
as Lane County veterans' service
officer, effective June 1, it was
disclosed Wednesday by County
Judge Clinton Hurd. The court so
far has not acted in the matter.
For some time Moriarty has
been acting as service officer and
as veterans employment officer
with the Oregon State Employ
ment Service here. The volume of
work has become too large to
continue handling both jobs, Mor
iarty said when interviewed, and
he will continue only as veterans
employment officer with the
OSES.
Act on Budget
The county court and budget
committee are expected to act
soon on the amount to be bud
geted to provide a county service
officer. ' .
Meanwhile It was announced
by George E. Sandy, director of
the Oregon Department of Vet
erans Affairs at Salem, that the
department now has three field
representatives to assist county
service officers aria! service offic
ers of veterans' organizations, one
of whom will have headquarters
in Eugene.
Dover to Come
Floyd Dover, formerly of Grants
Pass, will fill the post here, his
territory including southern Ore
gon, from Eugene on the north
and . from Klamath Falls on the
east. .
Henry George, former employe
of the War Assets Administra
tion, will cover northwestern
Oregon. Joe. Reynolds will con
tinue to handle the area, from
Portland east to Idaho and south
to Deschutes County.
Sandy met at the courthouse
Tuesday night with Judge Hurd,
representatives of veterans'
organizations, and State Rep. John
Snellstrom and State Rep. Her
man Hendershott, to discuss the
new setup. Sandy said the county
service officer will continue to be
the "king pin" of the setup, with
the state field men cooperating
and largely contacting service of
ficers of veterans' organizations to
assist them in their work.
He also said that an adequate
budget for a county service offi
cer should be on the basis of $1.50
per veteran in the county. Lane
County has more than 10,000 vet-
UN Seen 'Failure'
By Owen Roberts
HARTFORD, Conn. (U.R) The
United Nations was seen as a
failure Wednesday by former Su
preme Court Justice Owen J. Rob
erts who suggested that it be aug
mented by a federation of "like
minded" democratic nations.
Roberts claimed in a speech here
that the UN "has failed to function
in every important aspect in which
it was called to act" because it
recognizes national sovereignty.
The only way to create internation
al law, he said, is for nations vol
untarily to surrender sovereign
rights, as was done when the
United States and the Swiss feder
ation were formed.
