Black Market
Costly to US
WASHINGTON OP) Losses to
the United States Eovernment
mrougn money operations con
nected with Gl black marketing
overseas may exceed $500,000,000,
a government official estimated
Monday. He emphasized that this
is an estimate and referred report
ers to the war department. There
the officially stated answer said
only:
"Some United States military
and civilian personnel overseas did
participate in certain extra leiral
sales in Germany of personal, gov
ernmental or other dollar-acquired
supplies during and after the war.
These are commonly referred to
as black market transactions.
"Today, the U. S. Army has a
'long' position In German marks
which under present policy it is
disposing of by normal processes.
The present holdings do not, how
ever, exceed future contemplated
expenditures. A complete report
on the acquisition and disposal of
these holdings is presently being
prepared for the information of
the appropriate committees of
Congress."
