Fox Ex-Thurston Star
Fox, who was a star athlete at
Thurston High before Ed Brauner
discovered he could pitch, also
had an unfortunate season in 1946,
but is expected to be a regu
lar member ot the Cincinnati
mound staff this year. Before the
season got under .way Howard
was downed by an appendicitis
operation and when he returned
he was never able to get in top
condition, pitching only five inn
ings In comparison to the eight
wins against IS losses and a 4.94
earned run average the previous
season.
The big righthander, who has
a blazing fast ball and a good
wrinkle, may develop into a sen
sational moundsman it and when
he learns control. At the tail end
of last season he was sent to
Syracuse for conditioning and
pitched the Chiefs into the Inter
national League playoff with
seven wins and ono loss. But in
the first playoff game he suf
fered a simple fracture of his
pitching arm and had to retire.
The arm is okay now.
Howard has been in training
all winter and ha played consid
erable basketball with the Bend
American Legion team. He play.

Lowell and Sluslaw kept second
place in the Eastern and Western
Divisions respectively. Lowell de
feated McKenzie, 51-37; and Sius-
law swamped, Triangle Lake, 47'

ed Crow 75-81 in a high-soring
game to nail down third nlace

well measured Mohawk 48-44 to

The Eugene ' High Axemen
staged their hottest performance
ot the season at the Eugene High
gym Saturday night as they
trounced the Bend Lava Bears,
83-68, in a record-breaking Big'
Six League game. The victory
sent th Axemen into U with
Salern for the league lead but the
clincher for the Axemen in the
district was postponed as the
Boseburg Indian nudged out the
Springfield Millers in a bitterly-
fought contest 35-34 at Spring
field. The victory left the Indians
still with a chance at a tie with
Eugene in the district. In a non
league game at McArthur Court
the University High Golden Tide
defeated Lebanon, SO-SO.

Is- probably a new record ttor high
school scoring locally. Gene Miner
got 25 of Eugene's points and Bill
Sheffold and Dick Maudlin both
collected 21 for Bend. The game
was played on even terms until
late in the third quarter when the
Axemen started pulling away. Th

The Sprlngtield-Roseburg tilt
was marred by a total ot 98 fouls,
