Navy crashboat was nearby when
their helicopter crashed Into icy
polar waters Sunday.
Within five minutes alter tne
ship struck, the crashboat crew
had the two aboard the seaplane
tender Pine Island where a doc
tor administered stimulants.
Sessums, whose home is In New
Orleans, was pilot of the helicop
ter and Dufek, commander of the
eastern task force in the Navy's
Antarctic expedition, was a pas
senger.
The helicopter plunged into the
sea after its rotors became iced.
The crashboat commanded by En
sign Herman C. Stegen ot Peru,
111., and Boatswains Mate 1-e
Lawrence H. Pltser of Springfield,
111., was only four lengths away.

battering ram, smashed the plexi
glass covering on the submerged
cockpit He and Sufek crawled
through the top and Seaman Wil
liam Young of New York City,
grabbed them and pulled them
aboard tha crashboat.
