Nicotine Dust Said
Best Aphid Control
Nicotine dusts are still the stan
dard recommendation for control
of hop aphlds, though several of
the newer chemical dusts have
given promising results for use
when nicotine Is not readily
available, according to a report on
hop aphid research Issued by the
Oregon Stat College experiment
station.
The recent scarcity of nicotine
sulphate has created an acute
problem among Oregon hop grow
ers. This material has the advant
age of killing the insect both by
contact and by the fumes it gives
Off., ..-. . : , . .
The newer insecticides tried in
experiments over the past few,
years are purely contact Killers,
hence they have to be applied
more thoroughly to the under side
of the leaves.
Most of the machines now used
by growers for dusting are not
suitable for applying purely con
tact dusts, it was found. Aerosol
generators have shown promising
results with some of the new ma
terial but not with others.
