Biggest Liner
Ends Voyage
NEW YORK P Britain's
Queen Elizabeth, er ugly duck
ling days behind her, rode to a
queenly welcome in New York's
great harbor Monday as she com
pleted her maiden peacetime
voyage to open a new era of
trans-Atlantic luxury travel.
Resplendent in her new dress
of black, red and white, and her
rails lined with happy, waving
passengers, the 83,673-ton liner
shone in the morning haze as
she steamed to her North River
berth.
While a noisy little Army
helicopter hovered near the liner
and airplanes flew over her, two
fire department boats escorted
her to pier 90 were she docked
at 7:34 a.m. (EST). She carried
2314 passengers, many of them
delegates to the United Nations
General Assembly.
Among them were V. M. Mol-
otov, foreign commissar of Rus
sia, Senator Tom Connally (D
Tex), Andrei Y. Vishinsky of
Russia, Paul-Henri Spaak of
Belgium, Jan Masaryk of Czech
oslovakia, Quo Tai-Chl of China
and a British delegation headed
by Philip V. Noel-Baker. A cross
section of British nobility was
also aboard.
' The landing was In sharp
contrast to unheralded visits the
Queen paid to the New York
port in wartime, when the gray
painted giant, whose luxury
liner career was forestalled by
the war, brought home-coming
veterans into the port.

stock market today, with the former
holding a shade the advantage, but deal
ings wero among the lowest of the past
month or so.
Neither bullish nor bearish enthusiasm
nnti in evidence from the ooenlna on
although, near the close, advances of
fraction to a point or so were in the
majority. Bteels attracted support at the
last. Transfers for the full proceetHnas

shares.
A railv in recently weak cotton futures
and grains propped sentiment for stocks
to some extent, broKeis suggested, al
though gyrating commodities lUll pro
vided a cautionary Influence.
