Eugene Anemen Trample University High Eleven,
Tide Endures
Worst Licking
o4-0
By DEWEY RAT
Coach Henry Kuchera's Eugene
High Axemen made an impressive
194B gridiron debut Friday night
at Civic Stadium as they trampled
a badly out-manned University
High eleven, 64-0. It was the worst
defeat ever handed the Golden
Tide by the Axemen.
There was never any doubt as
to the outcome of the game after
the first few seconds of play and
Coach Kuchera took advantage
of the situation to give better than
three full teams needed experi
ence. The Golden Tide fought
gamely all the way but they never
had a chance.
It was the 11th straight victory
in the intra-city series for the
Axemen and their 15th in the 17
seasons that the two teams have
met.
Plenty of Axemen got a chance
to shine but probably the most
watched and the most impressive
was Right Halfback Robin Lee,
transfer from Jefferson High and
an all-city choice in Portland last
year. He scored the first touch
down of the game by returning
Don Etter's punt from his own 30
action

of the Dodgers with eight more to
go, can t expect easy going Sat
urday as they open a series with
the third place Cubs at Chicago.
And the Dodgers, fresh from a
home stand in which they won
10 out of 14 games, will face a
Brave team In Boston that Is at
its peak for the season, ambitious
to overtake the Subs, who are one
game ahead of them.
The Dodgers, who cut the Card
inal margin to a single game Fri
day with a dramatic, 9-3 victory
over the Reds In a replay of their
19-lnning, 0-0 tie, still are at a
definite disadvantage.
In order to catch the Cardinals
tthey must win while St. Louis is
losing and can overtake them only
through1 two victories while the
Redbirds are losing twice.
Dixie walker came through to
bring the Dodgers victory. in Fri
day's game, hitting a three-run
homer to cap a four run rally in
the fifth. Johnny Vandermeer,
who went 19 scoreless innings in
the 0-0 struggle, had the Dodgers
swinging futiley again and he was
given the benefit of a 2-0 lead in
the first of the fifth on a two run
double by Claude Corbitt off sur
prise Dodger starter, Art Herring.
The Dodgers made all their
fifth inning runs with two outs.
Singles by pinch-hitter Stan Ro-
jek, Eddie Stanky, and Joe Med-
wick produced one run then
Walker sent a fast ball soaring
over the right field screen for
three more. Hank Behrman came
in to protect Herring's lead and
pitched scoreless relief ball until
relieved by Hugh Casey, who el
lowed the Reds their final run ft
the ninth. The Dodgers also added
another in the seventh.
In the only other game, the
Tigers made 22 hits, six of them
by George Kell to defeat the In
dians at Cleveland, 15-1.
Roseburg Tramples
Myrtle Point, 33-0
ROSEBURG, Sept 24 Coach
Mel Ingram's Roseburg Indians,
rated the "team to beat" In the
Tri-County football league, open
ed their season impressively here
Friday night by defeating Myrtle
Point 33-0.
Duane Pope, smashing halfback,
was the sparkplug of the Rose
burg attack, and two linemen,
End Bill Benson and Tackle Bill
Marsters, were outstanding.
Benson scored in the first quart
er on a 20 end-around. Pope tal
lied twice in the second frame on
off-tackle smashes of five and 13
yards. Fullback John Ulrich scor
ed one of the two fourth-quarter
touchdowns with a seven-yard
drive, and Quarterback Tyler
Evans scored the other with one
yard sneak. Pope place-kicked
three extra points.
Despite the effective play of
Fullback Walt Barklow, the losers
lost mora yardage than gained
and had only three first downs s
against IS for Roseburg. Coach
Ingram used more than 40 players.

Rider Scores
The Axemen scored 27 points
in the first quarter. After Lee's
first score, Jim Douglas kicked
off over the goal line. On the first
play a bad pass from center went
bounding over the goal line and
End Bene Rider pounced on it
for another Eugene score. This
time Douglas scampered around
end for the extra point. The try
after the first touchdown had
failed.
Douglas again kicked off. Roger
Pltchf ord took it on the goal -line
for the Tide and returned it to
the 11. Again the first Uni High
play backfired as Halfback Jack
Countryman's . pass was inter
cepted by Eugene's center, Jack
Smith, who ran it over for an
other score. Keith Welch punched
over left tackle for the point,
making the score 20-0.
Late in the quarter the Axemen
scored on a 24-yard pass-lateral
play from John Reed to Rider to
John Banks. Fullback Jim Hanns
nlunged through for the extra
point.
Reed Plunges Over
Early in the second quarter after
Reed's pass to Lee had put the
ball on the Unl High 10, Reed
plunged through center for a six-
pointer to run the score up to S3.
The try for point failed. Douglas
got off a long gallop to score the
next touchdown as he broke away
over left tackle to score all the
way from his own 43. Again the
try for point failed.
The final score in the second
quarter came a short time later
when Ernie Wilde intercepted
Jack Countryman's pass and went
all the way from his own 44. No
extra point again and the half
time count stood at 43-0.
The Axemen added, insult to
injury in the third quarter as
Gene Miner's pass to Reed was
good for 43 yards and a TD. An
attempted pass for the extra point
failed but Lee's second long gai
lop of the evening soon ran the
third quarter score to 57. Tne nnai
score came midway in the last
quarter after Banks' end around
gallop had put tne oaii on ine
Uni High 15. Lee went through
center for six and Miner scored
from there. Hanns' pass to Miner
brought the final total to 64,
Uni High's deepest penetration
into Eugene territory came in the
closing minutes of the game after
Mead had recovered an Axeman

Redmond Wins 20-7
Over Sweet Home
SWEET HOME, Sept. 21 Red'
mond High came from behind in
the second half here Friday night
to defeat Sweet Home, 20-7, in
non-league game.
Fullback Ken Arnold passed to
Halfback John Lutton on a 40
yard play to score for Coach Bur
ton Boroughs Huskies In the first
period. But the invaders from
Central Oregon tied the count in
the second period with a shurt
line play and scored twice in the
third on long end sweeps to ann-x
the victory.
Sweet Home threatened in the
final frame and had the ball on
the Redmond 10-yard line at the
final gun.
More, than 1500 fans were in the
stands for the opening game of
the season for the Tri-County
League team.
Salem Vikings Top
Lebanon Club. 19-0
LEBANON, Sept. 21 Halfback
Roger Dasch paced the Salem Vi
kings to a 19-0 victory over the
Lebanon Braves of the Tri-County
League here Friday night. Dasch's
reverses were effective, resulting
in all three touchdowns. He re
versed to Bud Michaels for a 27
yard gain and a touchdown early
in the second quarter and repeat
ed to Dick Allison for four yards
and a touchdown nine plays later.
After receiving the second-halt
kickoff, Salem rolled to a toucn
down in ten plays, Dasch reversing
again to Allison for two yards.
Dick Hendrie drop-kicked one ex
tra point. Dasch completed six of
seven passes.
The small and inexperienced
Braves threatened only once in
the fourth quarter when a bad
fourth-down pass gave Lebanon
the ball on the Salem' 34. In nine
plays the Brves went to the 17,
where a forward pass was inter
cepted by the alert Vikings.
Most of the . Lebanon yardage
was made by Bob Downing on line
bucks.
