Cowboys Rout
CIO Pickets
REEDSPORT (U.B Labor
got the runaround literally
here Saturday from cowboys
who tore banners from the
hands of CIO union pickets pro
testing sale of 1200 pairs of ny
lon stockings at a rodeo.
With a yippee-I-O, top hands
chased from the rodeo grounds
members of the CIO Interna
tional Woodworkers of America,
who charged as an unfair prac
tice the sale of nylons. From
there, the state police took up
the cause and banned the pick
ets from the highways. But the
woodworkers said they would be
back with reinforcements.
The nylon sale was staged by
the Coos Saddle Club and the
Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary
Club as a means of promoting
candidacy of their entrant in the
queen contest in connection wltn
the regatta to be held here Aug.
9-11. Where the nylons came
from was never explained.
The woodworkers and the
CIO International Longshore
men and Warehousemen union
have their own queen candidate
and claimed the sale unfair to
their candidate. Purchase of a.
pair of nylons at $1.35 meant
one vote for the clubs' candidate.

Warren Seeks
Rent 'Freeze'
SACRAMENTO (U.R) Gov.
Earl Warren will ask the legisla
ture to freeze rents in the state at
OPA levels for 90 days when the
special session he called opens
Monday, he disclosed Saturday.
The governor's stand may pro
long the session, it was believed,
since a number of legislators have
indicated they believe landlords
should get a percentage rise such
as granted in a number of local
ordinances already adopted.
Warren explained that one of
the bills he will propose will
freeze rents for 90 days. Another,
which under the constitution can
not go into effect for 90 days,
would set up a commission with
power to allow adjustments.
"We drafted it that way because
there is no telling what raises if
any are justified. We haven't the
power for determining that,, he
said.
The governor said he probably
would add an item to the special
session call to permit appropria
tion of about $4,000,000 for pro
curement of more federal surplus
housing.
The money would be added to
$7,500,000 residential housing fund
and $250,000 student housing fund
voted earlier in the year to aid in
making war housing available for
occupancy.

Foreign Service Pay .
Hikes Win House Okay
WASHINGTON (U.R) the
House Saturday passed and sent
to the Senate legislation to reor
ganize the State Department's
foreign service and provide pay
increases to career workers and
ambassadors.
Ambassadors' salaries would be
jumped from $17,500 to $25,000 a
year.
Supporters of the bill said it
would put the United States for
eign service on a comparable ba
sis with those of other leading
nations. They said the pay In
crease would open the foreign
service to persons now financially
