It is expected the new equip
ment will be delivered so that the
Shasta Daylights can go into oper
ation in the late spring of next
year, depending on the ability of
the manufacturers to make de
liveries. The Shasta Daylights will
leave Portland and San Francisco
in the morning and arrive at the
opposite terminals in the late eve
ning of the same day. SP repre
sentatives in Eugene said no
schedules have been set for the
trains.
With general design of the new
cars now definitely established,
Ormandy pointed out that a dis
tinctive feature of the Shasta Day
light will be the spacious windows
of extra height to give travelers
greater view of scenic attractions.
Also Included will be reclining,
rotating seats with foam-rubber
cushions, fluorescent lighting,
electric water coolers, electric ele
vators for ease in handling lug
gage, rich fabrics and modernistic
interior tints, and a new recorder
device to Improve broadcasting of
music when radio reception is
poor.

Forger Gets Two Years
Spencer Gordon Sparrow, after
pleading guilty to a charge of for
gery, was sentenced to two years
in the state penitentiary Friday by
Circuit Court Judge Dale King.
Sparrow, arraigned June 26 on
the charge, had originally pleaded
not guilty. .

How to Swim
The county Red Cross swim
campaign is in full swing in many
communities in Lane County, re
ports Miss Margaret Brewster, dl
rector of the campaign this sum'
mer.
Programs that will be active as
of Monday, July 22, include those
in Blue River, Cottage Grove,
Mapleton - Swisshome, Florence,
Triangle Lake-Blachly, Junction
City and Eugene. Conducting the
classes are Red Cross wattr safety
instructors, Barbara Bozorth, Hen
el Huestis, Harriet Monot, Ruth
Robertson, Ralph Huestis, and
Miss Brewster.
Total enrollment of the cam'
paign to date is 650 children, Miss
Brewster said, the largest enroll
ment for the county in more than
five years. In Cottage Grove,
where 100 are enrolled, 80 are be
ginners. All but a few of these
children have learned to swim
after two weeks of instruction. The
program will run one more week
there.
Registration for the Springfield
campaign, which will be held July
29 to August 17 at the men's pool
on the campus, and for another
from August 6 to 31 at. the An
chorage, is now In progress. Walter
Hansen, director of Springfield
playgrounds, said that registration
cards are being distributed, and
may be obtained at any Spring
field playground.
Eugene children may register
for another campaign to be held
July 29 to August 17 at the men's
pool at the Red Cross office in
Eugene. Registration dates for
this campaign will be July 26
and 27.
Any child interested may regis
ter for the free Instruction.
County Receives Fund
From Secretary of State
Mrs. Grace Schiska, Lane Coun
ty treasurer, announced Saturday
that the county received $1,661.43
as the county's share of the "man
ufacturers and importers" tax,
from the secretary of state's of
fice. The county, as designated by the
state law, receives 75 per cent of
these funds, which are distributed
on a population basis and ear
marked by the state for aid to
mothers, old age benefits and di
rect relief.
The city of Eugene received
$903.14.

500 Poles Arrested
In Pogrom Investigation
WARSAW OP) An authorita
tive source said Saturday a total
of 500 shopkeepers, artisans and
others had been arrested In the
government's investigation of the
Kielce program of July 4.
This informant said a special
military court was expected to try
about 40 militiamen in connection
with the incident, in which 41
persons, mostly Jews, were killed.
Nine men convicted of taking part
in the program were executed last
