Records as American
Bowling Congress Opens
BUFFALO, Mrch 21 (U.fi) The
dream of -every average American
bowlers came . true today in the
43rd annual American Bowling
Congress championships when
two mediocre, middle-aged keg

in the doubles division by almost
100 pins.
Johnny Gworek, 43-year-old
rolling mill foreman, - and Henry
Kmidowski, 42, an unemployed
welder, toed the line yesterday for
their first A. is. c. tournament.
Both holding competitive aver
ages or . less tnan no, they
promptly compiled a record game
and took the doubles lead to write
a Conderella story unmatched in
the annals of the classic.
Kmidowski fired a 199-234-26S
for a 698 total while Gworek add
ed a 662 for a first-place total of
1360. Gworek finished with a
blazing -279 to give the unknown
team 544 'for its last game the
highest single-game mark in A.

Ad Li ska Visits Camp
But No Agreement
With Beavers Reached
SAN JOSE, Cal., March 21 (U.fi)
Whether or not Ad Liska will
hurl his famed submarine ball for
the Portland Beavers this season
remained a question today ' after
the reluctant pitcher visited the
camp briefly and then left again".
Liska, who was under fine for
failure to report for duty, talked
with General Manager Bill Klep
per yesterday, but left saying he
was "going back home" after Jail
ing again to reach a contract
agreement. Klepper was silent on
the negotiations with his No. 1
holdout, but indicated he may talk
with Liska again in Portland.
Rain and cold weather kept the
Beavers from the practice field
yesterday, and it appeared they
may be washed out again today.
