used that extracted the nicotine
from the smoke, there was no ef
fect on night vision. Smoking
cubebs and corn-silk cigarettes
did not affect the eyes.
Dr. Sheard concluded that the
nicotine, rather than anything
else in smoke, has the bad effect
on eyes for night seeing.
Breathing pure oxygen, a prac
tice of aviation flying at night,
did not overcome the effect of the
nicotine.
6000 Tests Made
Before the war the late Ray
mond Pearl, of Johns Hopkins
University, reported tests on about
6000 human beings indicating that
smoking tobacco shortens life.
But he said it would require tests
on 100,000 to be certain of this.
Dr. Pearl died before the exten
sive experiments were made.

Death Confirmed
Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Tramp, 1877
Willamette St, have received con
firmation from the War Depart
ment of the death of their son,
Sgt. Hobert I Tramp in March,
1845,
Sergeant Tramp, who was 21 at
the time of his death, was killed
in the crash of his B-29 on a
flight over Nagoya. The entire
crew perished in the crash. Ser
geant Tramp, waist gunner on
the plane, is buried now in an
American cemetery in Nagoya, his
mother said. The family is plan
ning to have his body brought
home.
The young airman attended high
school at Marshfteld, and was a
student at the University of Ore
gon where he was associated with
Sigma Chi, men's fraternity. He
entered the air forces it! April,
1942, and went overseas to Satpan
in December, 1S44,
Sergeant Tramp was awarded
the Distinguished Flying Cross,
the Service Medal, and the Purple
Heart.
Besides his parents he is sur
vived by a brother, Virgil, and
two sisters, Mrs. Bob O 'Conner
and Miss True Tramp,
Charles H. Watts
Charles H. Watts, 62, died Tues
day at his home in San Jose, Cal,
Mr. Watts was born in Eugene,
the son of J. O. Watte, former
Eugene watchmaker, and was in a
watch repair business to San Jose.
He is survived by his wife, Ge
neva; one son; and one sister, Mrs,
Mary Wallace of Eugene.

supper at the Del Key Cafe. Those
