Turkeys Plentiful
This Christmas
' By WALTER WARREN
SAN FRANCISCO W The
' Pacific coast, aa well as the whole
nation, will have turkey in an
abundance never seen before this
.' Christmas but many housewives
will have trouble getting small
"turkeys.
The turkey crop hit record size
this year in California, several
other states, and for the nation.
" Both civilian and military supplies
are plentiful.
Stocks have gone into storage In
the last few weeks at an unpre-
',' cedented rate. Along the Pacific
''. coast the flow into freezers has
been more than seven times as
great as a year ago.
Coast freezer stocks totaled more
.. than million pounds on Dec.
"1 more . than four times last
year's hoard. Most of that be
longs to the fighting men. It will
b shipped for variation of meat
diet during early 1945. Heavy
shipments have lately been made
to Hawaii.
The industry, in recent years
trying to build up turkey as a reg-
, ular year-round meat, instead of
' just a holiday treat, seems to have
sold the idea to tjie armed lorces,
whether intentionally or not.
There will be big supplies
through the first half of 1045, as
laying hens are marketed. That
is why housewives will have little
luck getting 12-15 pound turkeys
for Christmas. Growers who got
30 cents apiece for- turkey eggs
during the hatching season this
year are keeping hens for another
try at that lucrative market. The
holdout of turkey hens points a
prospective finger toward another
big turkey-growing season in 1945.
Turkey prices to consumers are
about at ceiling prices here 51
cents a pound. The office of price
administration has told whole
salers they can sell to consumers
as low as 48.3 cents a pound, be
ginning tomorrow, Dec. 21. That
permission revokes a previous or
der against wholesalers going into
the retail' market

joy and satisfaction of self-forgetful
service which Is the peren
nial reward of scouting. Frank

Ambassador Fears
Germans In Spain
LONDON (UFS Lord Temple
wood said today in his first
speech since his retirement as
British ambassador to Madrid
that Spain was "morally occu
pied" by the Germans for most
of the past five years.
Templewood, the former Sir
Samuel Hoare, made his maiden
speech in the house of lords after
his return from Spain last week.
He said that while he was in
Spain, nazl gestapo agents watch
ed every move he made, living in
a house ne xtdoor to his residence
and looking over the wall at him.
Templewood told the house that
German influence pervaded many
important sections of Spanish life,
adding:
"Although Spain was not mili
tarily occupied in those early
years of the war, Spain was mor
ally occupied."
Templewood said 'he gestapo
was "constantly trying to suborn
m ydomestle staff" and continued:
"I saw the gestapo talcing
photographs when a riot was
stirred up for the purpose of
breaking windows of the British
embassy.
"I saw again what was more
sinister. From time to time the
gestapo would seize some man
or woman in Spanish territory
and take them over the frontier
to their death or torture in Ger
many or one of the occupied
countires.
"I had the conviction that this
Germa ninfluence this terrible
German peril was leaving be
hind It corruption, bitter hatreds,
an dvendettas, and was stadily
undermining all the moral stand
ards of life in which it instilled
its poison."
