better known as the purple
heart battalion is coming home
to his brothers in Hawaii. Of
his parents he knows nothing.
He left them in Japan four years
ago where he attended school as
ordered by his father.
Niesl Inducted
Dick was inducted along with
several hundred other Hawaiian-
born nisei shortly after Pearl
j Harbor. For the first time in his
life he was brought to the main
land. "That first winter in Wiscon
sin," he explained, "was pretty
1 rugged. None of us had ever seen
snow before and we kept the
hospitals full of cases of pneu
monia. From there we went to
: the deep south where we were
hated bitterly and distrusted. Be
lieve me, none of us was reluct
ant to leave." '
Dick got his first purple heart
when a high explosive shell
sprayed him with lagged pieces
of steel a few days after his out
fit went into action for the first
time.
Award In Italy
The first oak leaf cluster came
in the Italian campaign where
more shrapnel pitted his left leg,
sending him to the hospital for
six weeks last spring. Purple
heart number three and the
bronze star came simultaneously
in the bloody fight for the Vol
turno river crossing, where Dick
received his commission in the
field after the majority of his
company's officers had been eith
er killed or wounded. His last
wound occurred when a German
tank shell fired at point-blank
range shattered his left leg.
A fellow-American officer,
Capt. L. Leo Sautler, Long Beach,
Calif., expressed lt this way:

Oregonian Figures t
In Saipan Story
Cpl. AUeh Q. yong, a Chinese
American from Portland and a
University of Oregon graduate,
was an interpreter recently for a
family of Japanese civilians
rounded up on the island of
Saipan, according to a United
Press dispatch.
PFC Henry M. Pahnke of Wis
consin was on a sightseeing tour
of the north central area of
Saipan when he spotted a child
running into a cave. Pahnke and
four other Americans made their
way down a steep cliff high above
the cave until they reached the
entrance. A Japanese man raised
his hands and came out of the
cave, followed by his wife and
five children, the oldest eight
years.
The enlisted men took the fam
ily back to their unit where
Corporal Wong talked to them.
The Japanese refused to eat
Christmas candy, cookies and
cheese offered to them by their
eaptort, untfl the eight-year-eld
boy, after sniffing and tasting the
food, began to eat. The rest of
his family quickly followed suit.
At the refugee camp, according
to a naval officer, the family, who
had hid in a cave for five and a
half months after , the island was
captured was in "a better state of
health" than many civilians who
had been in hiding a shorter
period of time. Tne Japanese had
been living off. a vast store of
canned and crated rations and
rice.
Corporal Wong has been over
seas since tht summer of 1044.
He Joined the army in the winter
of 1943 after his graduation from
the University of Oregon.
