Forgery Defendant
Sent To Penitentiary.
Glen Erlcks, who pleaded guilty
in circuit court several day, ago
to the charge of forgery, was sen
tenced by Judge G. F. Sklpworth
Wednesday to a term in the state
penitentiary not to exceed three
years. He was taken to Salem
later in the day by Nelson F.
Whipps, deputy sheriff.
. Erlcks had waived grand jury
in action in his case. He was ac
cused of passing a bad check.

Boy Scouts, Jim Valentine of
Troop 18, Cbttage Grove, received
the award of Ufa scout, next to
the highest rank in scouting, at
the South Lana district court of
honor held here Tuesday.
In a special ceremony as a part
of the court of honor, L. S. Hlrd
presented a two-star service flag
in honor of Elwin Howell, now in
the United States navy, and Harry
Kelly, who is serving in the mer
chant marine, who were former
Boy Scouts of Troop 13 of Dorena.
Other awards which were pre
sented at the court of honor in
cluded second class scout, Robert
Duer and Robert Kyle of Troop
13i and first class scout, Lynn
Morss, Kenneth Cooper, Robert
Barta, Eddie Garoutte, and Clar
ence Oppheint of Troop 13.
Merit badges were awarded to
the following: Troop 13, Lawrence

Edison P-TA held It. meeting
Tuesday evening. Glenn Griffith
led the group in singing of Christ
mas carols. The fourth, fifth, and
sixth grade pupils told of Christ
mas customs in other countries,
particularly those countries in
which there are American troops.
Mrs. Willis Merriam gave a back
ground talk on Christmas carols
of this and other lands, and sang
some of them.
At the short business meeting,
Max Dudley, P-TA president, re
ported nearly $260 taken In on the
recent rummage sale. The two at
tendance prizes went to Miss Iola
Houghton's first grade room.
These prizes are held by the win
ning room until the next meeting.
Fifth and sixth grade mothers
were in charge of refreshments,
Misses Marie Tinker and Edith
Coleman, teachers, presiding at
the serving table.

FIKE EXTINGUISHED
SPRINGFIELD Two flue fire
were extinguished early Monday
morning in Springfield by the city
fire department. The first, caused
from an overheated flue, was at
the home of Mr.. J. A. Bainbridge
at 6 a. m. Firemen reported that
the approximate damage totaled
$15.
A 7:45 a. m. blaze Monday at
the home of Aloha Duckworth
caused no damage.
