bazaar and food sale were: Mes
dames Cora Bilderback, Clara
Pattee, and Gail Byers. Eight
members were present and two
visitors. The visitors were Mrs.
H. E. Conover and daughter,
Lorreen. The next meeting will
be a silver tea and will be held
at the home of Mrs. Catherine
Annabel!.
Mrs. Jack Dillon has returned
home following a visit with her
sot Tinvid Dillon of Camp
Ruc'ker, Alabama. Enroute home'
she visited her daugnier, ivirs.
Burt McConnell a Wac, at Santa
Monica, Calif. Another son,
Wayne Dillon, S-2-c, who has re
cently returned to Fan Francisco,
from the south Ps.-lfic, accomp
anied her home. He has a 23
day furlough.
P.-T. A. Reports Gains
The P.-T. A. membership chair
man, Mrs. Hazel Quigley, reports
that the kindergarten and second
and third grade rooms won in
the membership drive, each room
getting the same number of mem
bers. Due to illness In Mrs. Quig
ley'a home, the treat that were
promised the winners will be
given at a later date. There are
0 members in the P.-T. A. to date.
The Junior Mothers' club met
at the home ol Mrs. Albert
Smith recently, In the form of
"hard times" party. Mrs. May
Tong and Mrs. Marie Worden
were welcomed as new members.
The prizes of the evening were
won by Mrs. Pearl Aubin, Mrs.
Marie Worden, and Mrs. Wilma
Saunders. The next meeting will
be at the hall, Wednesday, Nov.
Jfl. Mrs. Wilma Saunders will
be hostess.

The W.S.C.S. of the Yoncalla
Methodist church met recently
with the president, Mrs. Perry
Smith, presiding. The meeting
was opened with group singing,
followed by the scripture read
ing. The treasurer reported $78
cleared at the election-day dinner.
Plans were made to hold their
regular Christmas bazaar on De
cember 6, starting at 2 p. m. and
continuing through with a tamale
supper at 6 o'clock and a program
at 8 p. m. There will be several
booths with fancy work, candy,
etc. Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Lloyd Par
sons, and Mrs. Gertrude Stoute
are in charge of the program.
Mrs. Harold Turpin and Mrs.
Cassins Rychard are in charge of
the grab-bags and Mrs. George
Edis is in charge of the fancy
work. Donations of any fancy
work will be appreciated. Mrs.
Avery La swell is in charge of
the young people's candy, booth.
The Assembly of God church
has had several improvements
recently. The floor has been sand
ed and varnished, and new rugs
have been put down.
LULU GRACE MILLER
SHEDD. Mrs. Lulu Grace MiU
er, 69, died at her home near
Shedd, Nov. 11, after a long Illness.
She was bom at Grand Island,
Neb., on Jan. 30. 1875 and came
to Oregon at the age of six years.
She married John P. Miller in 1899.
He died on Sept. 19, 1943.
The following children survive:

Mrs. Elizabeth Barber, Corvallls;

lodge No. 89 met last week. Seven
candidates were initiated into the
lodge. They were Lorene Parris,
Anneth Fox, Mary M. Looney,
John Knott, Roy P. Stolsig, LeRoy
StalUngs, and Donald Stolsig.
Election of new officers was
held. Those named are: Edna May
Woodruff, noble grand; Evelyn
Wiggins, vice-grand; Velma Stol
sig, secretary, and Vadura Green,
treasurer. Announcement was
made of the sealed bid sale on
Dec. 7. Every member is to bring
some article to be sold to the high
est bidder. Other lodges visiting
for the evening were Springfield
10, Eugene 1, Portland 1. Colorado
1, and Lebanon 1. Fifty-five mem
bers were -present. After lodge a
lunch was served and talks were
given by some visitors and the
new members, John Knott acting
as toastmaster.
Silver Tea Set
MONROE Mrs. Mary Daugh
erty, president, reports that the
members of the Monroe Mothers
association are sponsoring a silver
tea, to be held at the grade school
Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 22.
Proceeds will be added to the
funds of the association, and are to
be used to help out with the ex-
penses to be incurred in getting
the hot lunch project underway
at the grade school. A cook and
helper have been secured, both of
the Monroe community. The kitch
en has been finished, and the
serving of hot lunches will begin
just after the Thanksgiving holidays.
In connection with the ilver
tea, Mrs. Edna Wood, principal of
the grade school, has prepared a
Thanksgiving program, consisting
oi a play, songs, and readings.
Throughout the afternoon the
kitchen will be open to the public.

ents and teachern club met at th
schoolhouse Friday, with pupils of
miss Minnie miners and Mrs. Cul
len's room giving the program. The
business meeting was presided
over by Mrs. Harold Savage. The

been home on furlough and is vis

Eagles Planning
For Social Meeting
COTTAGE GROVE At a recent
business meeting of the Fraternal
Order of the Eagles, plans were
made to have a social meeting on
Nov. 22, instead of a regular busi
ness session. Late in the evening,
a chiU feed was enjoyed by the
members.
The Friendly eiub met at the
home of Mrs. Mark Morgan on
Friday afternoon. FoUowing des
sert, a regular business meeting
was held. The members voted to
prepare a Christmas box for the
soldiers in camp hospitals. Plans
also were made for the Christmas
party. The club will hold its
Christmas party at the home of
Mrs. Newton Land on Dec. 19.
Mrs. Veva Collier was a guest at
the meeting.

Mr. and Mrs. Cecil CaldweU en
tertained for an informal evening
of music at their home on Satur
day evening. During the evening
Mrs. George Hardy sang several
solos, accompanied on the piano
by Mrs. CaldweU. Arthur Mason,
Mr. L. C. Hart also played num
bers on the piano and electric
guitar. A men's quartet composed
of Mr. Caldwell, Larry Levens,
Frank Brown, and Robert Gra
ham, also sang. Late in the eve
ning, refreshments were served by

returned from Virginia where he
visited relatives and is at his
home in the Peoria neighborhood.
Mi's. Pool and sister, Mrs.
Floyd Bulman, are in Rapid City,
S. Dakota, visiting their father,
who is. seriously ill.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fox are
the parents of their first daugh
ter, born Sunday at the Lebanon
hospital. The little girl has six
older brothers. She has been
named Pearl. .
Shedd high students sponsored
a carnival in the gymnasium re
cently, proceeds from which will
be used for school activities. A
program was given including or
chestra selections, a vocal duet
by Nancy Pugh and Joan Ox
ford; instrumental duet by Betty
Davis and Vernon Elliott; vocal
solos by Mildred Nichols, with
piano accompaniment by Vernon
Elliott, and a short play.
The Drain and Shedd high
school football teams played here
on Friday. Shedd won 25 to 18.
The Priscllla club met at the
home of Mrs. Ellamay Pugh last
week, with 18 members present.
The first home demonstration
meeting that the club is spon
soring is to be held at the school
house in the home economics
room on Dec. 1. "Fewer Colds" is
to be the topic. Mrs. Ruth Rob
erts presented the contest with
the prize going to Mrs. Dorothea
McKinley. Refreshments were
served. The next meeting Is to
be at the home of Mrs. Yola St
John.
CARNIVAL SUCCESS
CRESWELL. The faculty and
members of the student body of
mgn senooi are apreciativ of
the loyal support given at the car
nival Friday evening. The total
receipts were $559, $76 of which
came from the sale of refresh
ments sold by the Parents club.
Since the freshmen claaa sold the
most tickets their candidate, Bev
erly Hancock, was crowned queen
by the business manager of the
class, BiU Lamb, with Joyce Mc
Donah, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
G. N. McDonah, serving as erown
bearer. The princesses were Elea
nor Fox of the senior elas, Margey
Setter of the junior class, and
Joyce Everson of the sophomore
class. Moving pictures supplied
by the Bonneville otfic in Eugene
were a feature and tour shows
were given. Several out-of-town
visitor were present The prize
went to R. C Claghorn. Jr. Jack
H. Gruber, principal, Mr. Harris,
Mrs. Bryant and Mr. Hopper,
teacher assisted the students with
the program of the evening.
AT FALL CREEK
FALL CREEK. Wednesday of
last week marked 50 years of mar
ried life for Mr. and Mrs. George
Rice. They had a quiet observ
ance of the day with a few friends.
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. CampbeU
are here from Napa, Calif., at the
home of their daughter, Mrs. Frank
Tailor. They are expecting to lo
cate on the Gregory place on Little
Fall Creek.
R. M. Taylor was called to
Seattle by a phone message saying
that Mrs. Taylor who is in a hos
pital there, is not so well.

Word has been received here of
the death of Ben McCollum, a
former resident of Walterville,
and who had resided in Cottage
Grove the past few years.
T-Sgt. Lester Wheeler Is visit
ing at the home of his sister, Mrs.
Blanche Wassom, while he is on
his furlough. He has ako been
visiting in the Deerhorn vicinity.

ciety met last week, all day. for

the Thanksgiving harvest supper
held at the church Friday eve
ning. Thanksgiving week's meet
ing will be- held Friday. Nov. 24 so
those having school vacations will
be able to attend the aid meeting
