Aid society was entertained
Wednesday afternoon at the home
of Mrs. J. O. Binnt with Mrs.
David Francis and Mrs. Olive
Parlin assisting hostesses. Guests
were Mrs. John Bonnett, Mrs.
Neal, and Mrs. G. A. Bryant. Mrs.
K. C. Schwering presided, at the
business meeting. Devotions were
conducted by Mrs. Catherine Dor.

A daughter was born to Mr.

Butler Maternity home in Cot
tage Grove, Tuesday, Oct. 17. She
has been named Lenora Emily.
The baby is the first granddaugh
ter of Mr: and Mrs. E. W. Hoag
land of Creswell. The Campbells
also have a son, James, j

Platoon Sergeant Russell Grib
skov spent Tuesday at the G. A.
Hamden home. He has been on
Midwajy 22 months and is home
on a 35-day furlough. His mother
lives in Junction City.
Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Coil's son,
Emory Coll, has just completed a
five-day visit at home. He is a
research chemical engineer at the
Wilson dam, Alabama, -a TV A
project.

Women List Meeting
CRESWELL The regular
meeting of the W.S.C.S. of the
Methodist church wai held at the
church annex Wednesday after,
noon with Mrs. Frank Sly, Mrs.
H. G. McDonah, and Mrs. J. M.
Black as hostesses. Mrs. Lucille
Doty was a guest Mrs. J. E.
Smith presided at the business
meeting. The amount of $21.80
was reported received from the
annual mite box opening and
$4.18 from the junior group mis
sionary offering. A total of 250
pounds of clothing was reported
packed and sent to the center
in Eugene for overseas use and a
vote of thanks was given all who
contributed with materials and
help. Mrs. Smith also was in
charge of the lesson on medical
missionary work. . Mrs. C. I. Kent
conducted the devotions. Honored
at the birthday table were Mrs.
Minnie Smith, Mrs. B. A. Land,
Mrs. Russell Tendick, and Mrs.
Kent. Each honored member .was
presented with a potted plant.
Hostesses for the next meeting
are Mrs. George W. Ross, Mrs.
F. A. Everson, and Mrs. V. E.
Grousbeck.
The Home Economics club of
Creswell Grange met in regular
session at the Grange hall Tues
day afternoon. Mrs. J. P. Walker,
chairman of the ways and means
committee, reported $93.67 from
the recent dinner. Plans were
discussed for the landscaping of
the yard about the hall. Mrs.
David Francis, Mrs. H. E. Miller,
Mrs. R. C. Bruce and Mrs. H. S.
Joslin were appointed on the com
mittee. Plans for annual booster
night, Oct 21 also were discussed.
The roll call was on Halloween.
The next meeting will be held
Nov. 21 at the home of Mrs. G.
R. Miller with a no-hostess
luncheon 'at 12:30. Members are
to bring thimbles -and scissors.
Refreshments were served by
Margaret Vaughan and Mrs. V.
E. Grousbeck.
Potluck Held -
A company of 45 members of
the I.O.OJ. and Rebekahs lodge
and friends enjoyed a potluck
supper and a social evening at
the hall ' Wednesday. George,

Butte lodge IOOF of Eugene
showed pictures on the screen of
.the IOOF home in Portland also
of the Normandy invasion and
the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Other 'guests from Eugene were
Da. George Simon, P. Waldo Da
vis, and W. T. King. Mr. Davis at
the piano and Mr. King, violin,
played several numbers. Mrs. J.
R. Miller played the dulcimer.
Mrs. C. C. Hollemon sang sev
eral songs accompanying herself
on the piano and the ukulele. Mrs
C. I. Kent sang a solo. The mem-
bers were invited to the annual
homecoming of Spencer Butte
lodge Nov. 14. Frank A. Clack,
noble grand of the local IOOF
lodge, spoke briefly.

Birdshot Enters

WALTERVILLE Mrs. Donald
Alexander and her mother, Mrs.
George Willian, were surprised
Monday afternoon when they re
ceived several birdshot about their,
heads and indies from a gun of a
hunter who was shooting near
their premises. While standing at
her kitchen table Mrs. Alexander
said shot entered her house, strik
ing her about the head and on her
side, the shot making wounds but
not going into the flesh. One shot
went on into another room, strik
ing Mrs. Willian on the arm. Lois
Alexander, 2, standing beside her
mother, was unhurt. Several shot
were picked out of the outside of
the house. Hunters have more
than outnumbered the pheasants
in this vicinity.
PFC Howard Campbell and Mrs.
Campbell are here from Fort
Blakley, Wash., visiting at the
home of Mrs. A. A. Campbell for
a few days furlough.
Word has been received in this
vicinity of the death of Rolo
Potter, who was killed in action in
Italy, Sept. 17. Mr. Potter, who
was a small boy in this vicinity,
has two uncles living in Walter
vllle, George Willian and Clarence
Potter. Rolo was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Andrew Klasnlc of
Springfield, Oregon.

Barn Burned
NOTI Wednesday morning

barn and all its contents on Clif
ford Fisk's place. Jack Moore
house, Martin Montgomery, Herb

there to help but they were un
able to get the fire under control.
It is not known how the fire was
started. The loss is partly covered
by Insurance. Eighteen years ago
another bam en the same site was
burned. Mrs. risk said that she
will not let her husband build
another one on that spot again.
A family gathering was held at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
Buckrldge in honor of Sgt. and
Mrs. Harel Buckrldge, who are
visiting here from LaJunta, Colo.
