The 10,500 acres contemplated
in the East Long Tom is consid

- District Engineer C. C. Fisher
of Salem, commenting upon last
year's rejection of the East Long
... Tom project, referred to the
'. Junction City demonstration of
"opposition or disinterest'" as be
ing duplicated elsewhere in the
valley, judging from certain per
. sonal contacts, although no spe-
cial survey of opinion has been
conducted for other projects.
Engineer Fisher remarked that
the East Long Tom project was
the cheapest in the valley, cost
estimates being $2.55 per acre for
construction, over a period of 40 i preliminary canal, reservoir and
years, without interest, making a i drainage surveys, Including plans

The reclamation bureau esti
mates for East Long Tom for an

$1.50 per acre, was about the
- same as that of the Muddy Creeks
project, which has lately been
S1.35 per acre, after deducting
.discount.
: While the East Long Tom pro
ject's reception, and evidence of
similar sentiment in other sec
tions of the valley, has discour
' "aged further extended studies of
Irrigation possibilities, says En
gineer Fisher, and he accordingly
. -oetieves it probable that broad
scale irrigation in this valley is
something for the more distant
future and not likely to provide
any post-war Jobs, the reclama
tion bureau is represented as still
- ready and willing to cooperate
wiin .tne farmers wherever want
l"ed.
"SUM Open
The East Long Tom proposi
tion sun is open to the north
Lane county farmers, said Fisher.
..And limited studies recently have
been authorized covering especi
ally what is termed a Salem pro
ject, including lands which may
do covered irom the North San
tlam river with storage in the
proposed Detroit dam on that
'stream. That study will be car
: ried on in cooperation with the
army engineers in their study of
flood control, power and navlga-
,tion features of the proposed dam.
.. In addition to the completed
study of the East Long Tom pro
mts, mo reclamation Dureau Is well
might be put under irrigation, he
estimates.
He adds, then, however, that
oecause of heavy winter rainfall
ullowing farmers to operate more
or less successfully under a gen
eral cropping plan without irri
gation, and because of the appar
ent opposition or disinterest mani
fested toward reclamation pro
jects, hope for Irrigation expan
sion in the near future seems
slight. The East Long Tom project-
has been laid on the shelf
and will remain there until call
