nearly three years under Japanese
despotism returned to the street.
Fearlessly they stood in the
open. Some waved as the planes
passed overhead.
Thus the reborn American navy,
which had been forced to stand
by while the Philippines fell early
in the course of the war, struck its
first blow for the islands' free
dom. Tonight we have completed our
attack on Mindanao and are steam
ing away for a brief respite be
fore hitting the islands between
Mindanao and Luzon.
For two days this mighty car
rier task force commanded by
Vice Admr. Marc A. Mitscher
struck at will against the island's
many airfields, harbors and in
stallations, from Surigao in the

rolling foothills and fertile valleys.
The carriers themselves paced up
and down Mindanao's eastern
coastline with impunity. .
One time we were so close I
could see the island's high coast
line a mass through the distant
haze as we patrolled over the
famed "Mindanao deep," deepest
point in any ocean.
Initial attacks yesterday caught
the enemy off balance. By dusk
navy planes sank or damaged SO
ships ranging from small mer
chantmen to one ship of 15.000
tons or more: destroyed scores of
coastal sampans which Japan is
now pressing into service to re
place shipping losses: shot down
eight planes in 4he air and de
stroyed 60 on the ground.

started the carnage with a strafing
attack that littered the sea with

Fighter and bomber attacks on
harbor Surigao netted a dozen or
so additional sampans. For nearly
a half hour the Hellcats, led by
Lt. Cmrd. Franklin Cook Jr., swept
back and forth over the harbor
while bombs dropped from dive
bombers and torpedo planes over
head. Cmdr. Richard McGowan, Alex
andria, Va., led dive bombers in
an attack against largo cargo ship
or transport in the harbor. When
last seen the ship was burning.
19 More Divorces
Make Record Month
Nineteen more divorce decrees
were granted by Judge G. F.
Skipworth in circuit court Tues
day afternoon, making a total of
49 granted during September and
there is yet another divorce day
this month. Divorce cases usually
come up for hearing on Tuesday.
On Sept. 8 Judge Skipworih
granted 24 decrees, on Sept. 13
six more were granted and these
with the 19 granted Tuesday
make a record for any one month
in the local court.
