Yanks Get-
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1)
In trips back and forth across
the channel, sailors are restricted
largely to the beach and never get
chance to go inland and see the
fighting or pick up battlefront
souvenirs. But in the holds of their
ships are hundreds of pounds of
fresh meat and scores of cans of
fruit juices coveted by the soldiers.
Some of them about once week
gather up a jeep load of German
gas masks, rifles, machine guns,
pistols and helmets and drive
down to the beach for a bargain
ing session with the sailors.
The best barterer is a young of
ficer whose only souvenir is a
green parachute scarf knotted
around his throat. When the sail
ors crowd around and try to trade
him out of it he appears very re
luctant, explaining:
"This is no ordinary piece of
parachute. It is from a parachute
with which Maj. Gen. Maxwell
Taylor, commander of one of our
airborne divisions, landed In
France. I hate like hell to lose
this. It has real historic value."
That only whets the determina
tion of the sailors and after pro
longed debate the army officer
finally hands over the scarf and
drives off with a jeep loaded with
fresh frozen beef and stacks of
fruit juice.
At least once a week he repeats
