Wallace Assails
Rail 'Plunderers'
DALLAS, Tex, Oct 21 (UB
Vice President Henry A. Wallace
charged last night that wau
street-inspired "plunderers" are
tightening their stranglehold on
the nation's railroad empire and
are plotting to seize control of
new forms of transportation.
In a speech prepared for de
livery before a meeting of civic
and labor organizations here he
said the industry's "financial
manipulations" established ana
now are strengthening monopo
listic controls of the railroads
through illegal private rate-making
practices they seek to extend
to other traflsportation fields.
Calling their policy one of "the
public be damned," he demanded
they be stripped oi tneir power
by eonzress.
He conceded nis cnarges are
serious but said it is a known
fact that early financial manipu
lations in railroads were one of
the blackest pages of American
history and 'their consequences
linarer on.
"How these plunderers -' could
have escaped the consequences of
their evil . acts is incompre
hensible," he added. "They or
their - successors rule the rail
road empire today as they did in
the heyday of their - financial
manipulations. They are even
strengthening their grip."
He said those guiding the desti
nies of the railroads are not con
tenfwith their present monopolies
and now seek permission of con
gress to create regional transpor
tation systems to control and op
erate ail rail, motor, water and
air transportation facilities.
Monroe side In the contest were
Lois' Owen, Virginia Davidson,
Ruth Mintonye, and Ralph Paulus.
Special guest at the picnic was
Miss Elain Easton of Roseburg'.
Miss Easton and Sgt. Sellers are
to be married Sunday, Oct 24.
At the close of the afternoon a
gift was presented them by mem
bers of the Monroe post.
J. E. Koroush, accompanied by
his small son, Roger, age 6,
