Government Takes
All Mint Output
Lane county towers and distill
ers of peppermint will dispose of
their mint oil this year to the war
food administration, according to
a press dispatch from Portland.
The food administration will take
all existing supplies of the oil in
Oregon and Washington from ap
proximately 8000 acres of mint
grown in the two states. No
data on the acreage in Lane coun
ty is obtainable at the present time
but there are several hundred
acres of the crop this year and
several distilleries are in operation.
The stoppage of all sales by the
government was ordered "without
regard to the rights of creditors,
existing contracts or payments
made." The effective date of Sept
13 required 100 per cent delivery
to the federal agency, and a report
of all amount in excess of 25
pounds.
The oil has a present market
value of about $5 a pound and Is
used principally for flavoring and
medicine. Columbia, Marlon and
Lane counties are the biggest pro
ducers In Oregon while the lower
Columbia region and the Kenne-
wick region in Washington are the
best areas there. The 1943 crop is
about 70 per cent as heavy as the
1942 yield. '
