Chairman Ellison D. Smith, D.,
S. C, ot the senate agriculture
committee, forecast today that his
impending inquiry Into adminis
tration farm policies will "blow
the lid off so the public will
know the desperate outlook for
war food production."
He said Secretary of Agricul
ture Claude R. Wickard will be
the first witness when a special
agriculture subcommittee begins
public hearings next week. In
addition, he said, the group will
rail the heads of every other gov
ernment agency associated In any
way with the production, trans
portation and distribution ot food
here and abroad.
The subcommittee's Inquiry was
authorized Wednesday in a full
committee resolution.
Committee members complained
that farm administration policies
"directly contrary to the will of
the people as expressed by con
gress'' will result In "hunger, des
titution and want" unless cor
rected by the force of public
opinion.

RAF struck again at Hitler's
arsenal area in western Germany
overnight and sent powerful form
ations streaking across the chan
nel before breakfast today in one
of the earliest daylight starts. in
recent weeks. ,
The scope of the night assault
was not disclosed Immediately in
London, but the German radio,
acknowledging damage In one
center, said the raid was of the
small, "nuisance" variety.
The morning raiders, which
have included American planes,
headed across Dover strait toward
Calais. The weather was bright
with occasional cloud patches. -
Last night's assault was the sec
ond successive night attack on the
Reich, the big naval base and sub
marine building yards' at Wil
helmshaven having been heavily
bombed the preceding night.
Swift British Mosquito bombers
also struck at northwest Germany
yesterday afternoon while American-built
Mustang fighters at
tacked railways and other war
installations in northern France
Belgium and the Netherlands. One
fighter failed to return from these
daylight forays.

band, Mr. and Mrs. John Ander
son. He sccompanled his sister
to Seattle after she spent a week
in Eugene visiting relatives and
friends.
