Ration Liberalized
WASHINGTON, May 21 i
With greatly liberalized allotments
of sufar for home carmine the
government today encouraged
housewives to can a maximum of
the nation's fruit cropi but made
sure the sugar In each Jar would
be something less than normal.
New regulations, iuued by the
Office of Price Administration,
stipulated that housewives might
obtain one pound of sugar for
every four quarts of fruit to be
put up.
This compares with average
peacetime canning recipes, as esti
mated by government experts, of
one pound of sugar for every J'4
quarts of fruit. Only an honor
system and the threat of grave
penalties If caught preventa
home canners from putting more!

local ration boards for a purchase

sumers must state how much fruit
they canned last year. The time j

National 4-H Award
Harriet Phyllis Kempston of
Lorane. Lane county, has been
i announced as Oregon's first major
! winner for the year in the 4-H
! club field. News of her selection
I was received Thursday at the

: ant county club agent, from the
; national committee on boys' and
girls' club work.
Miss Kempiten has placed in
the blue award group in the
western extension section in the
farm accounting record contest.
Her achievement entitles her to
a trip to the 21st national 4-H
contest this fall.

County Workers
A Lane county committee of 24
sportsmen and uutdoorsmen were
named this week to form the work
ing leaders of a county-wide Keep
Oregon Green organization by Carl
R. Baker, county chairman of the
association.
Chairman Baker has named a
man to organize every community
in the county for this vitally im
portant fire prevention campaign.
"The objectives of the Keep Ore
gon Green association are few, but
important," Baker continued. "Our
principal purpose is to educate the
people of Oregon to the dangers
from Ire to our forests and fields.''

The mysterious Malay jungle
and the primitive Sakais who live
there are to be presented to Eu
gene Triday evening at the Metho
dist church, when Dr. Paul B.
Means will show mov.es of that
little-known region. Dr. Means
made frequent trips to the jungle
from 1930 until 1939. and the
movies were taken during his last
trip, in April 1939.

in Malay costume. The program
