Salvation Army
Will Play
Santa Claus
"Santa Claus by proxy.
oie
That's
the traditional role olaved bv the
Salvation Army, through the
medium of its Christmas kettles, in
which contributions are now be
ing deposited for Christmas and
winter relief, according to Adju
tant Carl Dueill, local leader of
the organization.
"Santa Claus must not pass up
a single house In Eugene," Adju
tant Dueill asserted, "and the
scores of clumsily scrawled notes
from confident children, dropped
in the mail box for Santa Claus
and sent by custom to the Salva
tion Army for attention, present a
real problem, which can be met
only through contributions from
local residents to the Army's
Christmas projects."
Names of needy families are
compiled carefully, and wholesome
Christmas dinners and toys for
children, as well as a winter re
lief program, will be provided
worthy families, thanks to the
generosity of the residents of Eu-
ene and their efforts to "keep
le pot boiling,"
Through the Salvation Army's
Christmas kettles Santa Claus
comes alive for thousands of chil
dren: the kettles are as traditional
in American life as Santa Claus
himself.

CHRISTMAS
LIGHTS
SIGWART'S
CHRISTMAS BELLS
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play.
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men!"
Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight!
Christmas in lands of the fair-tree and pine,
Christmas in lands of the palm-tree and vine,
Christmas where snow peaks stand solemn and white,
Christmas where corn fields stand sunny and bright.
Christmas where children are hopeful and gay,
Christmas where old men are patient and gray,
Christmas, where peace, like a dove in his flight,
Broods o'er brave men in the thick of the fight;
Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight!
For the Christ-child who comes is the Master of all;
No palace too great, no cottage too small.
Phillips Brooks
