Referring to the senate leeisla
tion to repeal section 2 and 3 of
the neutrality act and thus permit
American merchant ships to go to
belligerent ports, the president
said:

Mr. Roosevelt observed that the
house was acting on the eve of

United Mine Workers and the
steel companies over the issue of

dent's letter arrived at the capitol,
McCormack announced that he
had received a similar appeal
from Secretary of State Cordell
Hull.

Diphtheria Spread
Curbed in Courtly
No further spread of diphtheria
cases is reported by the county
health department and what may
have developed into a more se
rious widespread epidemic is now
aDparently under control through
the co-operation of the depart
ment and the local medical so
ciety. Nine cases were recently
reported in Coburg and vicinity.
Scattered cases may probably
break out and it is very important
that the health department obtain
the co-operation of the public, it
is pointed out in a statement is-
sued at the health offices. The
public can help by observing the
following:
1. See your doctor for any sus
picious case of sore throat, fever,
or stomach upset. He will prob
ably take a throat culture, which
is the only certain means of mak
ing an early diagnosis.
2. Observe rigidly the rules of
quarantine if they are imposed
on you. The quarantine is only
temporary; you will be released
as soon as it is safe, which will be
determined by two successive nega
tive throat cultures. A positive
culture may mean that you are a
"carrier" capable of transmitting
the disease without damage to
yourself.
3. Take your child to your doe
tor for immunization, which will,
In about six weeks to two months
help protect him. If for some rea
i son, this is not possible, you may
1 contact the Lane County Health
Department, by appointment, for
the same service.
"Diphtheria in children is se
rious and should not be regarded
lightly," -the statement adds.
"Your cooperation at this time is
highly solicited to prevent further
outbreaks and possible loss of
life." .
Wilson School Slates
Open House Event
Open house will be held at
Woodrow Wilson junior high
school, from 7:30 to 9:30. Thursday
evening in celebration of National
education week.
This open : house has been
planned, according to an an
nouncement from the office of J.
F. Cramer, city school superinten
dent, to give parents and teachers
a chance to meet informally, and
at the same time pave the way for
the organization of a P.-T. A.
group for that school.
A program has been planned for
8 o'clock. Classes will perform,
and school work will be on dis
play. All parents of children at
this school have been urged to
attend.
Washington Man
Is Arrested Here
Paul E. Erwin was arrested at
Glenwood Wednesday evening
on a warrant from Colfax, Wash.,
charging him with grand larceny.
He was locked up in the county
jail over night and Sheriff Nicely
of Colfax and Police Officer
Campbell of Pullman took him

county Red Cross roll call, Hale

citizens of Lane county have re.
ceived . certificates in first aid
training. At the present time vol
unteer instructors are conducting
35 classes in the county. The Ore'
gon Women's Ambulance corps is
being taught first aid by three vol
unteer instructors and must receive
their Red Cross certificates be'
fore completing their course m
ambulance training.
(3) Water safety Ten day
swimming programs were taught
in 16 communities in the county
during the past summer. Over
2100 children and adults were
taught how to swim or how to
swim better. Some communities
arrange to retain their instruct
ors and conduct a 20 or 30 day
program. This is done each year
in Wendling where the program

nursing classes are in progress at I
the present time and are being
conducted in the chapter offices!

other sick room equipment has
been furnished. Wendling, Flor
ence and Blue River are planninz
to start classes after the first of
the year and Mrs. Neil Hennessy,
chairman, plans to have approxi
mately 500 women trained in
home nursing during the next
year. Certificates are awarded
after 24 hours of lecture and prac
tical work.
(5) Production The program in
cludes both sewing and surgical
dressings. Over 1000 Lane county
women are participating in this
work and are producing 23,000
dressings every six weeks. Head
quarters are maintained in both
Eugene and Cottage Grove. Mrs.
Merle Chase and Mrs. G. E. Leh
man who are in charge of the
sewing for war relief and for the
soldiers and sailors hospitals an
nounced recently that they are
completing the 8000 yard quota
set for the past' six months.
Branches at Junction City and
Florence are also assisting with
this sewing.
(6) 'Accident prevention Eight
classes were conducted by vol
unteer instructors during the past
year. These classes approach the
problem on an educational basis.
"Check lists" tabulating accident
hazards, m the home and on the
farm were distributed through the
Lane county schools under the
leadership of R. C. Kuehner.
Gun Accident
CRESWELL, Nov. 13, (Spe
cial) Leslie Cameron, 19-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard
C. Cameron of Upper Camas
Swale, was found dead Thursday
morning In the underbrush about
one-fourth mile from his home
from gun shot wounds.
The youth went out alone hunt
ing Wednesday afternoon about 1
o'clock and when he did not re
turn a searching party was organ
ized. No trace was found until
Thursday morning when his father
discovered the body. Apparently
the loaded .22 which he carried
had become caught in the under
brush and discharged, killing him
instantly, according to Harold
Poole, deputy coroner.
Gile Holderman, state police of
ficer, also investigated the case.
The body has been taken to the
Schwering chapel in CresweU and
funeral arrangements will be an
nounced later.. -
Alvadore Man, 72,
Dies At Home
George E. Halladey of Alvadore
died Wednesday at his home at
the age of 72 years.
He was born in Redwood, Minn,
on Feb. 18, 1869. He was a mem
ber of the Methodist church.
He Is survived by his widow,
Mrs, Luella Halladey; six daugh
ters, Mrs. Luella Young of Alva
dore, Mrs. Ruby Brown, Rt. 1
Junction City, Mrs. Edith Berger
of Eugene, Mrs. Beulah Kraal of
Crow Stage, Mrs. Myrtle Hale of
Oakridge and Mrs. Leona Hawke
of Eugene; three sons, George M.
of Veneta, Clarence W. of Route 3,
and Ivan E. of Alvadore; and 21
grandchildren. ,
Funeral services will be Satur
day afternoon at 1:30 from the
Branstetter-Simon chapel with in
terment in the Inman cemetery.
