New York Markets
NEW YORK. Aug. 13 (API Stocks
gave off some color of recovery today
but In actual substance the market's
impovement was rather trivial.
A slow hardening process set in after
somewhat ragged start. Xndeoendent
firmness of U. S. Steel and signs of
better demand for rails, mall order
shares, coppers and soecisltles helped
to build general resistance In the latter
proceedings, ne close was mixed with
changes mostly In fractions. Deslings
were about 450.000 shares.
some buying was encouraged, brokers
reported, by a steady tapering of of
ferings which encouraged belief In
speculative circles the list was about
due for a turn after two weeks of al
most continuous slow decline. War bul
letins and domestic news contained lit
tle bullish Inspiration.
Progress of big steel stirred consider
able Interest In Wall street boardrooms
because It went hand in hand with
heaviness In Bethlehem, as was the case
yesterdsy. Some quarters suggested the
conflict of trends was due to switching
out of Bethlehem Into TJ. S. Steel on
the theory the former's price premium
was too high on the basis of relative
showings of the June quarter earning
statements. In each case profits were
pulled down sharply as compared with
tne tirsl quarter Dy tax provisions, but
in this, according to statistician.. Beth
lehem was harder hit than the steel
corporation.
