A good sized crowd attended
the Community club meeting held
Friday evening at the schoolhouse.
Preceding the business session a
program was presented as planned
by Mrs. Ira Isham, who is in
charge of that department. Two
piano solos were given by Miss
Marjnrie Buck. Harold Smith
lave the flag salute which was
followed by group singing. A
reading was given by Mrs. lona
Templeton. Two vocal duets were
sung by Miss Shirley Williams
and Mrs. Wesley Hansen. Mr.
rraz.ee gave a demonstration with
Indian clubs and waa accompanied
on the piano by Miss Buck. The
boys of the school sang. The pro
gram was closed by the audience
tinging two songs. Mrs. Arthur
Frazee, president of the club, pre
sided at the business session. Mr.
Perry, secretary, read the min
utes of the last meeting. A trea
surer's report was given by Mrs.
Marion Elston. It was voted to
buy the "Weekly Reader," cur
rent event paper, for the children
of the school. The topic of 4-H
club work was discussed. Re
freshments were served at the
close of the evening.

White Elephant Club
To Meet Wednesday
DEERHORN. Oct. 21 (Spe
cial) On Wednesday, October 23,
the White Elephant club haa been
invited to attend the semi-monthly
meeting at the home of Mn.
Vernon Stone. The day It spent
In visiting and sewing and a cov
ered dish luncheon is served at
noon. Each lady who attends will
please bring her tawing imple
ments and any material that might
be uted for quilts or children's
clothing.
A Four-H conking club of six
girls was organized recently at
the home of Mrs. Osmer Stacy,
who will be the locnl leader. The
girls plan to meet each second and
fourth Wednesday of the month
during the winter months. Janet
Stacy was elected president; Stel
la Coleman, vice-president; Bettv
Jean Ramsey, secretary; ' Belva
Wheeler, cheer leader; Harriet
Harper, tong leader, and Louise
Knox, pledge leader. The first,
second and third divisions of cook
ing projects are represented with
two girls in each division.
The hot lunch project for the
benefit of the school children was
under way this week at the Deer
horn school. Parents who take
advantage of this opportunity of
having their children served a hot
dish at noon in addition tn th
regular lunch from horn, are
asked to tend canned or fresh
vegetables, meat, milk, eggs or
groceries for the cook, Mrs. John
Sloan, to use. Many housewives
have canned extra Jan of food
from their gardens for the hot
lunches. The Deerhorn P.-T. A. is
sponsor of Ihe project as in the
past several years.

Hold All Day Meeting
The Gardenia club held an all
lay meeting Friday at the home
of Mrt. Jets Forrester of Lorane.
A covered dish luncheon was
terved at th lunch hour. A busi
ness meeting was held in the
afternoon at which time th club
voted to contribute to th milk
fund for the grade school children.
The club will meet in two weeks
at the home of Mrs. Clyde Hamil
ton. Th Rebekah lodge held a short
business meeting at the I. O. O. F.
hall Friday night. An announce
ment wat made that Mrs. Ver
nishia Newby of Amity, pretident
of the Rebekah Assembly of Ore
gon, would make her official visit
to the local lodge on Friday, No
vember 25, with the side of which
Mn. Elsie Currin it captain, to
furnish the refreshments. The
lodge will meet again in two
weeks.
The first fall orchestra practice
for the Methodist orchestra will
be held at the church Tuesday

Friday night and broke her hip.
She was taken to the Eugene hos
pital and is reported resting com
fortably.

social hour. Mrs. Harriet Ingram

For Alaskan Home
LEABURG, Oct. 21 (Special)
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Mallery
have sailed for Alaska on the
steamship "Yukon." They will go
as far as Seward by boat, then to
Anchorage bv train, where they
will take a plane to Ekwak on the
Nuskazak river on Bristol Bay.
They will be co-workers with Mr.
and Mrs. Franklin Smith in their
mission. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Mal
lery are sisters. Mn. Mallery had
spent two years in the mission
before she returned to the states
to attend Multnomah School of the
Bible. Mr. Mallery was ordained
a minister of the gospel on Fri
day evening, October 11, in Seat
tle", at the Gatewood church.
The regular all day meeting of
the Leaburg Ladies Aid is to be
held at the home of Mrs. E. F.

MAPLETON, Oct. 21. (Spe
cial) The Mapleton home exten
sion unit held an all-day meeting
at the church annex Friday. Dur
ing the busineis meeting the lol-
lowing officers were elected: pres-,
ident, Mn. Lee Smith; vice-president,
Mn. Louii Torricelat; sec-

county home demonstration agent
a luncheon was prepared. Miss
Lyle led the discussion of "Let's
Have Fewer Coldf." Those in at

Thompson, Harvey Welty, Walter
Huntington, Warner Waite, Law
rence Plowman, Fred Durdle,
Louis Torricellas, Frank Meade,

Earl Huntington, Marilyn Thomp
son, John Welty and Mary Ann
Smith in the nursery.
Form 4-H Club
At the grade school six 4-H
clubs have been organized. Sew
ing divisions one and two are led
by Miss Zetta Bennett. The of
ficers are: president, Elizabeth
Frederickson; vice president, Elva
Smith; secretary, Gale Wheeler.
The girls in these two divisions
have started on their projects.
Miss Eloise Smith is adviser of the
fifth and sixth grades' health club.
Those serving as officers thil year
are: president, June Rice; vice
president, Herb Peckham; secre
tary, Jim Maton. The adviser for
the seventh and eighth grade
health club is Mr. Lee Smith,
principal of the school. The offi
cers are president, Maxine Har
rington: vice president, Joanne
Wheeler; secretary, Margaret Ann
Rice. There are alto song leaders,
yell leaders and several commit
tees in this particular group.
Mrs. Neely is advisor of the
third and fourth division seving.
The officers are: president, Doris
Mason; vice president, Nellie
Hunzicker: secretary, Rose Marie
Mason. There it no fifth division
sewing at the grade school this
year.
Mr. Smith advises the boys'
handicraft club. The officers are:

have started on their projects.

school classes continued as usual.
The Mapleton Hi Lights, high
school paper, which has won the
Lane county award for the last
four years, will be entered in the
state contest at the University of
Oregon. October 25 and 2. The
Mapleton HI Lights will compete
tor the Association cup. awarded
to the best monthly mimeographed
paper. Two copies of the 1939-1940
publication will enter.
Sam Fort, representative for
Master Engravers, displayed grad
uation announcements to the
high school seniors. The orders
will arrive in March.
The freshman class rf the
Mapleton high school entertained
witn an all-school party at the
gymnasium Friday evening.
