Townsend Club to Meet
Townsend club No. 1 is holding
a 630 dinner and business meeting
Thursday evening at the Silver
Spray hall. The club met the past
week with 64 present. Old-time
dances open to the public are held
each Wednesday and Saturday
night. The club's meetings are
held Tuesday at 8 p. m. at the Sil
ver Spray hall.
Youth League Meets
The Youth League , will hold its
regular monthly "guest night"
dance at the W. O. W. hall, Tues
day, April 23. Each member is
permitted to bring one guest. The
Springfield and Eugene leagues
will not hold regular meetings
April 29 and 30 on account of
the May-day dance on May 1 at
the Wintergarden.
Vets Have Sunday Dinner
The Spanish-American war vet
erans and their families will have
a potluck dinner at the armory
at 1 p. m. Sunday, the occasion
being annual muster day. Mem
bers of the camps and auxiliaries
at Albany and Cottage Grove
will be guests of the local organizations.
Pianist to Give Program
Miss Nelda Patterson, piano
pupil of Mrs. Olive Mull, will
play piano selections on the
broadcast of the American Legion
auxiliary Monday from 8 to 8:15
p. m. Her numbers will be the
rondo from Mozarts Sonata in C,
Waltz, Opus 34, No. 2, by Chopin,
and Sonata in E Minor by Haydn.
Autos Crash
Cars driven by Lloyd A. Need
ham, 648 Sixth avenue west, and
Gerald L. Newton , Springfield,
collided on Charnelton between
Thirteenth and Fourteenth Satur
day afternoon. The accident oc
cured when Mr. Newton was pull
ing out from the curb. Fenders
on both vehicles were smashed.
Go to Bellingham
Max Hoppe and son Marvin
and daughter, Mrs. Earl Wheeler,
have left for Bellingham, Wash.,
where they were called by the
serious illness of Mr. Hoppe's son,
Maurice Hoppe, a former Eugene
resident. Mrs. Hoppe left for
Bellingham last Sunday.
Social Group to Meet
The social club of the Sons of
Union Veterans' auxiliary will
meet Thursday at 2 o'clock at the
armory. Mrs. W. E. Buchanan and
Mrs. Myrtle Spencer are in

Dr. W. B. Neal, Who recently
retuened from a trip to Central
America, will speak and show

Has Poem In Magazine
N. D. Winfrey, local writer of
verse, has one of his poems, "In
the Land of Oregon," in the cur
rent issue of the magazine
"Tumblewood," published in Port
land by J. E. Shelton, former Eu
gene newspaper man.

Boys to Be Taken Back
Officers from Portland will be
here Monday to return to that
city two juvenile boys accused
of the theft of four cars. They
were picked up in the S. P. yards
here Thursday night.

who has been working on the
new highway bridge at Depoe

Bike Stolen
The bicycle of Lloyd Lawrence,
Rt 4, Eugene, was stolen Satur
day, according to city police.
Leave for Indiana
Ernest Schrenk, Jr., and Ray
mond Laird of Pleasant Hill have
left for South Bend, Ind., where
Mr. Schrenk will buy a new car
and the two will drive it home.

Benefit Party Set
Wednesday Afternoon
SPRINGFIELD, April 20 (Spe
cial) The Girl Scouts benefit
card party is to be held Wednes
day afternoon at the home of
Mrs. Levi Neet, it was announced
Saturday. The party is to begin
at two o'clock.
All those wishing transporta
tion to the affair are to meet at
the home of Mrs. Walter Gossler,
506 F street.
Both auction and contract
bridge will be played, and "500"
and pinochle are included in the
game schedule.
Mrs. Frank Mauney is chairman
for the benefit. Committee chair
men are: Mrs. Walter Rust, tables;
Mrs. Keck, tickets; Mrs. James
MacManiman, prizes; Mrs. Lar
son Wright, decorations; and Mrs.
Robert Pifer, refreshments.
The funds from the benefit will

Elects Officers Monday
SPRINGFIELD. April 20 (Spe
cial) New officers for the cham
ber of commerce during the com
ing year will be elected Monday
night at the regular dinner meet
ing of the group it was announced
by Phil Bartholomew, president,
Saturday.
In addition to the elections,
committees to lay plans for
Springfield's big industrial cele
bration, probably to be scheduled
for the latter part of May, will
be appointed, and Mr. Bartholo
mew urges that all interested in
the event attend Monday s meeting.
Dr. J. F. Cramer, superinten
dent of schools in Eugene, will
oe a Matured speaker at the
chamber dinner, and is to talk on
"Growing Pains," with reference
to the growth of Springfield dur
ing the past few years.
The dinner will be at 6:30 o'

New Sub-Division to
Be Put on Market
Dr. Royal GIck of Eugene has
purchased a 47-acre tract of land
on the new Pacific highway north
of the city from P. J, Thatcher of
Corvallis and plans to subdivide it
and place tracts upon the market.
The property is located across the
highway from the Bonneville sub
station, only a short distance north
of the overhead crossing! On it
are two houses and barns and
other farm buildings. The work
of laying out the place into acre
and half-acre lots is now under
way. , ..
Frank IT Kinney of the Oregon
Settlement association handled
the deal. Mr. Kinney said Satur
day that within the past 30 days
he has sold three other acreage
tracts to Eugene business men.
Odd Fellows to Give
Dinner For Rebekahs
Spencer Butte lodge, No. 9,
I. O. . F., is giving a fellowship
dinner Tuesday evening at 8:30
with members of Eugene Rebekah
lodge as guests. Rebekahs, and
Odd Fellows and their wives are
invited. A chicken dinner will be
served. The committee in charge
