Hatoy's Pictorials Were
Republic's Last Issue

two-year-old republic, -originally
carved out of Syria, shown on the
map stamp above, became part of
Turkey as the price France-paid
for the promise of Turkish assist
ance in the Near East.
The 1939 pictorial series of four
designs and 13 values, and a post
age due set of four values, com
prise the principal philatelic issues
of the short-lived republic. The
first Hatay stamps were Syrian
and Turkish overprints. The. end
of. the republic is noted, philatelic
cally, by overprints of a Turkish
issue of 1930.
Hatay became lndependentmil'
der a treaty between France and
Turkey in 1937. Turkey formally
annexed the 3000-square mile na
tion of 250,000 people on July S3;
1939. Citizens were permitted to
choose Syrian, Lebanese or Turk'
ish citizenship. Those rejecting
Turkey will be given 18 months. )o
leave the area.

publics.
Although the Pan American
Union is only a half century old
the foundations of inter-American
accord were laid by Simon Bolivar
In the first Congress of American
States in 1826. Subsequent meet'
ings were held during the 19th
century, but the first definite steps
toward preservation of peace in
the western hemisphere and Im
provement of commercial relations
were made at the 1890 meeting at
Washington.
Twenty-one republics are now
Included In the Union, and Its
effectiveness has been proved m
peaceful settlement of several ma
