Five Elevens May Be
Undefeated In 1938
NEW YORK. Oct. 21 U.R
Figures never lie and today they
say it will be a miracle if more
than eight major football teams
finish the season unbeaten or
untied.
And spicing mathematics with
gridiron logic, it seems more
likely that no more than five will
come through unscathed, which
will be just about enough to go
around the various New Year's
day bowls.
Nineteen major teams are un
beated and untied and three are
in the undefeated but tied class.
Seventeen of them encounter at
least one team on the perfect list
bfore the season ends. Six of
them play two and even three.
Out of that hodge-podge, the fig
ures say, can come only three
with perfect records. Throw in a
couple ties and there's no saying
what might happen.
Five of the class "A" elevens
have as their remaining opposi
tion teams that have been beaten.
All these five can make it and,
looking at it purely from a math
ematical standpoint, this quintet
plus the above trio makes eight.
The law or averages, however,
steps in there and says that at
least three of the eight must be
locked, which leaves five possi
bilities and, if you care for our
opinion,, that quintet will be
Pittsburgh, California, .Santa
Clara, Texas Christian, and Dart
mouth. The others on the perfect rec
ord list are Boston College, Car
negie Tech, Georgetown, Syra
cuse, Villnnovu, Iowa State, Min
nesota, Notre Dame, Oklahoma,
Baylor, Duke, Georgia, Tennessee,
Vanderbilt, and on the tied list
are Fordhnm, Boston University,
and Northwestern.
Those in the list who do not
meet any more perfect record
teams are Dartmouth, California.
Santa Clara, Georgetown, and
Georgia.
Henry Cotton, Sammy
Snead May Be Matched
NEW YORK, Oct. 21. (UK
Golfers awaited today the reply of
England's Henry Cotton to a "name
your own terms" proposal for a
match with Sam Snead billed "for
the world's professional match
play championship."
Snead already had accepted the
offer of Elmer Ward, Boston, to
meet Cotton in a 72-hole match.
Before the passage of the Pure
Food Laws, squash, "doctored"
and attractively packed, often
masqueraded as canned peaches.
