who comes to Oxford to "teach
the natives" and himself learns
plenty in return, "A Yank at Ox
ford" affords the star his great
est opportunity, his flair for com
edy and his ability to handle
genuinely dramatic scenes.
Lionel Barrymore, as Taylor's
lamer, ana Maureen O Sulhvan,
as the English ' undergraduate
whom the hero meets at Oxford,
lend their accustomed polished
performances, while In the British
players who also hava leadina-
roies auaiences may note at least
two potential stellar "finds" of
tomorrow. Vivien Leigh, as the
"other girl," reveals a flashing.
yet, subtle personality which may
well set a new style in "vamp
comediennes." Griffith Jones, as
the Briticher whose enmity for
Taylor motivates much of the
plot, looms as a most personable
leading-man discovery, stalwart
in appearance and sensitive in his
performance.

its thrilling theme, and behind the
barricades of China's amazing
city within a city for its teeming
thrills, "International Settlement"
timely story of today's danger
zone, is also on the MacDonald
program. Delores Del Rio, George
Sanders, June Lang and Dick
Baldwin are featured in the 20th
Century-Fox picture.
Powell And Rainer
Starred In Hit
Now At Mayflower
William Powell and Lulse
Rainer are co-starred in another
dramatic adventure story of in
ternational intrigue, in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's
adaptation of
Baroness Orczy's novel, "The Em
peror's Candlesticks." which comes
to the Mayflower theatre for the
next three days. George Fitzmau
rice directed. John Considine, Jr.,
produced.
This romantic novel starts In
Vienna after the kidnapping by
socialists of Nicholas, last of the
Czars, when he was a ma of
twenty. Powell, as socialist who
hates Russia, is commissioned to
carry a message offering release
of the Czarevitch In exchange for
the release of socialist prisoners. I
He hides his papers in one of a
pair of candlesticks once used for
this purpose by Marie Antoinette.
Miss Rainer as a secret agent for
the Russian police conceals p ipers
in the other candlestick. Th story
then revolves into an exciting race
between these two for the candle
sticks which are stolen by thieves
who do r.ot know of the papers
within them.

The regular meeting of the Shedd
Garden club was held this week
in the Methodist church basement.
Mrs. George Maxwell and Mis.
Kate Croft were in charge of the
program. A talk on the subject of
"Rock Gardens" was given by
Mrs. Frank Ackerman of the Hall
Vloral Shop of Albany. Miss Meda
Brown gave a reading and the
usual business meeting was held.

There is much gaiety on the
screen at the Heilig theatre these
days, for Joe E. Brown is back,
and he has brought with him a
rib-tickling story and a cast that
does no end of good. Joe has dish
ed out heaps of fun in his career,
but rarely has ha been as gener
ous with his helpings as he is in
Columbian "Wide Open Faces,"
which takes its first local bow
Sunday.
As an amateur rube detective,
Joe can get in plenty of trouble,
and his current story finds him in
just such a role. He gets mixed up
with a wholesale shipment of
metropolitan gangsters quite by
accident, and in no time at all
the situation is well out of hand.
Such able and attractive per
formers as Lyda Robert), Alison
Skipworth, Jane Wyman, Alan
Baxter, Luclen Llttlefield, Berton
Churchill, Barbara Pepper and
Sidney Toler do much to enhance
the general merriment. It is a
well stocked east.

Walterville Mothers
To Give Carnival,
And Program
WALTERVILLE, March 12.
(Special) The mothers of the
Walterville grade school children
are sponsoring a carnival and free
program March 25 for the purpose
of sending club children to Cor
vallls to the 4-H summer school.
Four half scholarships Is the goal
for the carnival. The carnival is to
be a penny affair and In the eve
ning a checker tournament will be
held. All checker players, cham
pions and otherwise, are invited to
enter the tournament.
Mrs. Milton Ashley is chairman
for the food and refreshments.
Mrs. E. M. Neer for ways and
means, and Mrs. A. E. Peters for
the fancywork. a

Playing At Rex
A husband who'd rather be poor
for the rest of his life than ever
tell a lie, phis a wife whose chief
delight in lite is thinking up new
whoppers, get themselves into the
year's most hilarious collection of
laughs and mixups in Paramount's
gay new comedy-romance, "True
Confession," which opens Sunday
at the Rex theatre. The wife is
Carole Lombard, the husband
Fred MacMurray; and John Barry
more, co-starred with the roman
tic team, plnys an eccentric dere
lict who threatens to blackmail
Miss Lombard. "True Confession"
was directed by Wesley Ruggles.
The excellent work which John
Boles did in "Craig's Wife" is now
reaping rich rewards for him. For
it was because of this that ha was
signed by Samuel Goldwyn for the
leading male role in "Stella Dal
las," which is the current attrac
tion at the Rex theatre.
Barbara Stanwyck is in the title
role and featured in the cast are
Anne Shirley, Al Shean, Alan
Hnle and Barbara O'Neil, It was
directed by King Vidor.
The role of . Stephen Dallas
which Boles plays is the one that
first brought Ronald Colman to
screen fame In 1925 when Gold
wyn produced the silent version
of "Stella Dallas."
