DVENTURE
NTENSELY curlout man
was Shopkeeper Antony
van Leeuwenhoek of Delft,'
Th contents of
water and of food and blood per-,
petually fascinated him. ' So
Antony began to tinker with,
lenses when he found that glass;
magnified objects.
Looking at a drop of rain
water one day through a lense
be had fashioned himself, Antony
discovered a world of minute
animal life. Writing later he
called thenVwretched beasties"
which he said were "a thousand
times smaller than the eye of a
large louse." But thus did Leeu
wenhoek become the first of the
microbe hunters. Without know
ing It he had opened new and
vast fields in the study of hu
man diseases.
