modern American dance music,"
alias Paul Whiteman, will provide
entertainment for homecoming
crowds on the University of Ore
gon campus Friday.
The maestro will direct his 30
piece orchestra in an hour con
cert In McArthur court, beginning
at 8:30. At 10 o'clock and contin
uing until 1 a. m. he will play in
the court for the university's gala
homecoming dance.
An abundance of featured ar
tists will be heard with the or
chestra. Whiteman's hobby of dis
covering new talent keeps his
troupe liberally sprinkled with
coming stars.
With him on his tour through
Eugene he brings Jimmy Brierly,
handsome tenor; Marian Manners,
southern soprano; Al Gallodoro,
ace saxophonist; Roy Bargy. out
standing pianist; the "Swing Wing"
of Teagarden, La Vere and Tea
garden, and Mike Pingatore, banjo
marvel.
Seats for the hour's concert pre
ceding the dance are priced at 75
cents and 35 cents for high school
students. Tickets for the dance are
$2 per couple. Reservations may
be made with the educational ac
tivities office on the University of
Oregon campus.

starts one of the better football
pictures of the year "Saturday's
Heroes." Taken from a story by
Francis Wallace about football and
big business, the picture retains
all the excitement of the book. Also

iff," "Life Begins In College" Is the
title of the film starring the Rltz
brothers and now playing at the
McDonald. It's a laughrlot, with
the looney lads even trying to
play football in coonskln coats.
Also on the bill is "Bulldog Drum
mond Comes Back," starring John
Barrymore.
"Silent Barriers" is the title of
the State's main feature to run
through Saturday. Also on the
double program is "Hopalong Cm
sidy Returns," with Bill Boyd once
more the terror of western out
laws. The Mayflower theatre's Thurs
day attraction is "Turn Off The
Moon" and stars Charlie Rugglcs,

At Meeting
About sixty members of the
American Legion auxiliary attend
ed the Willamette district council
meeting in the Moose hall in Eu
gene Wednesday evening. A num
ber of guests were in attendance,
and among auxiliary officials
were Mrs. E. P. Dorrls, Mrs. S. S.
George, Mrs. Delia Borin of Eu
gene, past department presidents;
Mrs. Lewis of Reedsport, depart
ment legislative chairman; Mrs.
Frazier, department chaplain, Mrs.
Mable McTurf of Marshfield, de
partment secretary; Mrs. Myrtle
Raven of Corvallis, district presi
dent; and Mrs. Hattle Connett of
Albany, department junior activi
ties chairman.
Installation of council officers
was held, with Mrs. Ada Cox of
Florence, president; Mrs. Elmer
Gcigor of Eugene, vice-president,
and Mrs. Zoe Heath of Newport,
secretary-treasurer.
At the close of the meeting, the
group joined with the American
Legion for refreshments. The next
meeting is to be November 17,

A covered dish luncheon will be
held Friday afternoon at one-fifteen
o'clock In the McKenzle River
temple by the Blue River Stnr club,
Order of Eastern Star. Guest day
will be observed, and cards will be
in play during the afternoon. All

District Aid Meet

COBURG, Oct. 21. (Special)
Ninety-two members and guests
of the sub-district No. 4, Ladies
Aid of the Methodist Episcopal
church were present for the cov
ered dish luncheon at Wendling
Tuesday.
Mrs. Fred E. Chambers, Eu
gene, president, presided. Devo
tions were conducted by Rev. Earl
Cotton of the Wendling church.
Minutes of the last meeting were
read and standing committees re
ported. Ten districts reported on
work for the past year, and plans
for future year, roll call followed.
Special songs were sung by Mrs.
W. J. Landess, a reading was giv
en by Mrs. D. R. Fullerton,
Springfield.
Luncheon Held
After the nominating and reso
lution committees were selected
the group adjourned for luncheon.
The afternoon session opened by
singing. Dr. B. Earle Parker of
the Eugene church brought a mes
sage, "Faith by Love." A read
ing was given by Mrs. Hester
Reed, Cottage Grove, and a song
by Mrs. J. I. Kent, Creswell.
Mrs. Coffee of Eugene gave three
readings. Special song was giv
en by the Wendling group. Drr
Louis Magin gave an address on
the woman's place in church.
Election Held
The nominating committee re
ported and Mrs. Fred E. Cham
bers was unanimously re-elected
president for two years, and Mrs.
Gantz of Springfield was re
elected treasurer.
The courtesy committee ex
pressed appreciation for enter
tainment. Oakridge invited the
Aid to meet with them next year.
An offering was taken and pre
sented to the Wendling church.
Many Represented
Aids represented at the rally
were Coburg, Cottage Grove, Cres
well, Junction City, Marcola,
Wendling, Oakridge, Riverview,
Springfield, Westfir. Dr. Magin
dismissed the group with singing.
Auxiliary Event
The Typographical Union aux
iliary held its monthly meet Wed
nesday at the home of Mrs. H. S.
Russell. Those attending the meet
ing were Mrs. A. F, Bremer, Mrs.
Gilbert Barber, Mrs. Harry C.
Farley, Mrs. Robert C. Hal, Miss
Cora Kreamer, Mrs. Oliver Spies,
Mrs. Stuart A. McDonald, Mrs.
Ralph C. Thomson, Mrs. Charles

next meeting will be with Mrs.

and game officials for central Ore

the fish facing death in dry pools.
