EYOND Siberia's northern
shores, deep in a world of
Arctic ice, powerful steam
ers cut a jagged course
these days, hewing out a vast
new Soviet empire in the legen
dary "land of the white death."
Disaster met the first on
slaught of the Chelyuskin in
1934. It sunk and its wearied
human cargo was saved some
60 days later only after Pilot
Lyapidevski had flown from
Moscow to rescue members of
the party, a few. at a time, dar
ing the Siberian winter to do it.
To save space, men were car
ried in the gasoline tanks of the
plane so that all might get out
alive. That was In April, more
than three years past. But dis
astrous as was that expedition,
it was not to be the last!

Today men play chess by
radio along Siberia's northern
shore's; some 40,000 pioneers
are .'colonizing this vast area;
towns, and ports, and mines
and factories are springing up
like mushrooms, Russia has
moved'in on the last frontier, em
barking on a gigantic scheme of
industrialization, navigation and
aviation in the Arctic that has
really just begun.
The North-east Passage Is
now open for navigation three
months of the year, linking Eu
rope, Asia and America. Here,
in the weather shop of the
world, is the base for future reg
ular trans-Polar flights. Arctic
Hero No. 1 in this work is Prof.
0. 1. Schmidt. One of his camps
Is portrayed on a 1935 Russian
commemorative stamp.
