WASHINGTON, July 13. OJ.fi)
James Roosevelt, the president's sec
retary and eldest son, denied emphati
cally before the congressional tax in
quiry committee today that he ever
had utilized foreign personal holding
companies for tax reduction purposes.
The committee promptly voted to
side-track a republican demand that
young Roosevelt's income tax returns
be investigated.
I The president's son appeared with
out advance notice hefore the commit
tee to refute charges made last week
by Rep. Hamilton Fish, R., N. T..
that, he had been interested in foreign
personal holding companies for the
purpose of reducing his income tax
payments.
"I want to state that neither now
nor at any time have I had any con
nection with foreign personal holding
companies,'' Roosevelt told the committee.
FliORENCB, July 13. (Special
Airplanes are getting to Tw quite a
common sight in Florence these days.
When the air show was in Marshfield,
several of the planes flew this far
north, circled, and went back. How
ever, Monday brought a plane closer
when Sovia Mnrchetti was forced down
in his seaplane on the Siuslaw river
one mile up the river from the coast
guard station. The coast guard cut
ter steered it up the river on the tide,
and it is now anchored behind Jhe
new Legion hall, just below the ftridge.
The seaplane No20K. belongs to the
Alaskan Airways, and Mr. Marchetti
was flying from San Francisco to
Seattle when he was forced down
here because of two strong head winds.
He plans to take off as soon as the
wind goes down.
Improve Buildings
Quite a few improvements in and
around Florence have been started
lately. The Kyle building on Main
street is being painted. Mr. Oster
hoff is doing the work. Also, some
very extensive landscaping and shrub
planting, under the supervision of Guy
Faris, have been done by the state
highway department around the new
public library and the north approach
of the bridge.
