JLe vou read this article, which gives many '
men to the secret of fascination, look about
u at YOUR friends! Make a note of the ones
like the most and then a note of those you
ttly don't enjoy. Now, make lists as to WHY
like the ones you do. The chances are you'll
Lithe reasons running something like this:.
t) The ability to understand difficult situa
tions. '
12) Honest, pleasant eyes. '
3) A ready smile but not a grin!
(4) Knowledge of some special field or knowl
edge of many things.
IS) Patience this does not mean laziness.
61 Sincerity!
17) A well modulated voice.
it) Freedom from affectation no man
nerisms.
1) Ability to laugh even at themselves.
10) Independence of thought and action.
You see In this nothing that has anything to
with fads or fashions. The man from the
irth woods may be as charming as the play-
fresh from Palm Beach or the beautifully
wned daughter of the town's wealthiest
inker. -
Clothes actually have very little to do with .
keination, although clothes may heighten cer
lin charms. Certainly every one enjoys looking
a wen groomed, fashionable woman, but thou-
(nds of tests prove that both women and men
tuire more than the ability to wear clothes In
Fer to please their friends and make their
mlet envious.
Speaking as an editor I'd sav that there Is no

And, as for that elusive quality of "fascina

ARMED with Miss Maxwell's list of the
. world's "ten most fascinating women" and
the determination to find out precisely what
constitutes "fascination," the writer looked up
Thyra Samter Winslow, author, and discussed
the subject with her.
"I do not know many of the ten women Miss
Maxwell picked," said Miss Winslow, "and so
I can neither quarrel nor agree with her choice.
But I'll pick my own ten or twenty most
fascinating women from among those I happen
to know.
"My twenty are not world beauties. Some are
not even pretty nor young. A few are indifferent
to clothes and wear Just any old things A hat
with parrot feathers, perhaps, when stylish
women are wearing plain French berets.
"Speaking of women I consider fascinating
and interesting. I think I can give you an out
line of what they are like. Then I'll name a few
of them. Most of the interesting and fascinating
women I have met are marked by originality,
even if sometimes they are regarded as eccen
tric. "One' woman I know Is ugly as a hedge fence,
dresses like the very devil, is on the hefty side
in weight, she is sometimes rude, and she Isn't
young In fact, she'll never again see 50. but
fascinating! Why, I'd rather spend ten minutes
with her than an hour with any one else. A
room brightens when she enters 1L You experi
ence a warm glow Just by being in her presence.
"The women I think are Interesting are often
odd numbers' to other people. But then a lot
of people I like are Just a little bit mad. This
adds to their fascination. They're more than
Just a bit off normal.
"Some of the women I think fascinating are
homely. Some wear the strangest kind of
clothes. They are often abrupt In manner, dis
regarding little manners some people set so
much store by. Some are old and some are
young: their ages range all the way from 25
to 65 and more. But they all have independence
of thought and action, a fresh and young view
point. "They are all frank and honest. They are
natural In mannerism and without petty affec
tations. They have a sense of humor. They can
even laugh at themselves. Most of them are
successful business and professional women,
others are Just "home girls.' A few are 'celebri
ties.' But they are all stable people.
"They are not carried away by their own suc
cess or by the success of others. They are kind.
They are usually busy. They are. In nearly every
case, doing worth-while work In the world. They
have a sense of balance and of values. They
have a wide variety of Interests and are en
thusiastic over many things.
"All of them have one outstanding quality
they are Interested In people. And they are good
listeners. To say that a woman can be a social
success simply because she is a good listener
and nothing else is ridiculous. But if a woman
MISS WINSLOW suggested that one way
for a woman to be Interesting is for her
to try to understand other people. She said:
"To understand people is a necessary adjunct
of charm, of fascination. You cannot be ego
centric or bored with or Indifferent to others
and be an interesting person yourself. And a
woman, to be considered charming, a woman
whose personal fascination attracts to her many
friends and admirers, must not only be inter
ested in people but she must also be Interested
in a wide variety of things This gives her a
rich storehouse from which to draw. She Is
really alive, she knows life, she understands
human beings, she knows what is going on in
the world, and all of this fires her imagination
and arouses her enthusiasm. This makes her a
vital, fascinating person.
"She not only takes from others but she has
Something to offer them In return. A fresh
viewpoint. A philosophy. Wit, perhaps. Ideas.
Sympathy. But while my kind of fascinating
woman is kind and sympathetic, she 1b not
falsely so. She has no hypocrisy In her make
up. She is sympathetic only when she focla real
sympathy."
Curious as to the identity of some of Thyra
" Samter Winslow's "ten most fnsclnatlng women"
and wondering what they were like, she was
urged to name some of them.
"Before I do," said Miss Winslow, "let me say
right now that I do not believe a woman can
be fascinating unless she, has sex appeal for
men and charm for women, or unless her
achievements are so outstanding that you do
not stop to think of either. I mean that a strictly
'man's woman.' the kind of woman who does
not appeal to members of her own sex or who
does not like other women, Is rarely ever really
captivating. Neither Is the woman who attracts
only women and from whom men turn away
Indifferently.
"Well, then, having made this clear, I'll head
my list with Dr. Mary Halton. of New York
City. She Is one of the most fascinating women
I know. She Is not young, she Isn't beautiful,
but her charm Is greater than that of the loveliest-looking
feminine creature I have ever met
Dr. Halton is a woman physician who has done
more good than any other woman 1 can think
of since the death of Jane Addams
"She has always fought for the woman who
' haa made a so-called 'social mistake.' She la
now fighting for the rights of the child born out
of wedlock, and yet she probably has brought
more babies Into the world than any other
woman obstetrician, and under greater difficul
ties. She works among slum children as well
as millionaires.
"Next on my list of fascinating women come
three women editors. They are Mary King. Helen
Duer Walker and Katherine White. They are
Interesting because they have a great breadth
of viewpoint, a quality which Is usually sup
posed to be purely masculine. They have It. too,
without sacrificing a single feminine trait. All
three of these women are most attractive In
appearance,
"All three are interesting In modern thing.

Lynn Fomaniic, Famnus Stage Star, Has

They have kept a feminine outlook, too. despite
the fact that they must dally deal with both
men and women. They rmnlilne the analytical
and Judicial mind beautifully. They do not lose
their fresh viewpoint with the punning of tunc,
cither.
"I consider Mary Johnson one of the most
fascinating women artists I know. Her Ideas
are sometimes a little too radical for my taste,
but she. at least, Is thinking, for hernclf. She
Is always awake to new adventures Last year
she thumbed her way to California traveling
In everything from a broken-down little coupe
to millionaires' Rolls Royces. Every one liked
and respected her, too, because she was so ob
viously herself "
MISS WIN8IXW then named a much-quoted
woman, a writer, a poetess, who Is con
sidered a great wit. although her tongue Is often
thought a little caustic
"Dorothy Parker. In my opinion, Is an inter
esting and fascinating woman," said Miss Win
slow, "but not because she Is always being
quoted on wine-cracks and clever retorts, be
cause I think a lot of those things are merely
legends and that she doesn't say them at all.
Marlenc Dietrich With Her Little Daugh
ter. Miss Dietrich Was Chosen by Elsie
Maxwell, New York Social Arbiter, as
One of the Ten Most Fascinating Women
in the World.
But sho Ib lnt creating to mo because she lives
her life exactly aa sho wants to live It. When
other women get catty about her, she knows
how to handle tho situation. She simply goes
suddenly very high-hat with them, Instead of
bothering to answer back. This la disconcerting,
to say the least.
"She Is always amusing, and she haa always
kept an Individual, original viewpoint, refusing
to fall in with mass thinking."
Women wrltors then came in for their place
In tho Bun, In Thyra Samter Winslow's sun, at
any rato.
' Fanny Hcnallp Lea, Kathleen Norris, Edna
Fcrber, Inez Haynca Irwin and Ida Tarboll are
all captivating women. Inez Haynea Irwin, wife
of Will Irwin, writer, is a warm, charming and
delightful woman. She Is a little on tho plump
sldo, but Hint, to her admirers, merely spells
years of cutlng good food. She haa great warmth,
sho Is humorous and sympathetic. You feel a
lively glow as soon aa you get In a room with
her. Fanny Hcaalip Lea Is understanding, inter
esting, colorful, with a kcon viewpoint on life.
"As for Edna Ferbcr, I find her attractive
because I like her sense of humor, which she
has kept through years of success. It is easy
enough to rctuln a sense of humor If you are
u failure, but It Ib difficult to do so when you
arc successful. .
"Kathleen Norris also has a warm, glowing
personality, mid many of the same qualities as
those possessed by Inez Huyncs Irwin. Ida Tar
hc 1 1 I find Interesting because she Is young in
appearance and mind, although she Is over 75,
and because she Is, at thlB age, busily at work
on no fewer thun three books.
"I'll iminc among the screen stars three ex
ceptionally fascinating women: Marlene Dietrich,
Joan Crawford and Clauiletto Colbert." Mar
lene Dietrich also line a place In Miss Maxwell'!
, list of ten fnsclnatlng women.
"All three of these women dress beautifully,
but with originality and restraint. They should
be Judged by their clothes more than other
women, bcciiunc their profession demands that
they dress well. I do not think clothes are Im
portant In the cbbo of other women who are
fascinating and Interesting They can be attrac
tive, charming, even though they are on the
verge of being dowdy. If women are Interesting
and their minds are keen, they can wear un
becoming hats and get away with It."
Entering tho operatic field and the realm of
music, Miss Winslow picked Cladys Swarthout,
singer, as her choice. She said:
"Cladys Swarthout has real charm. She haa
Kept a certain simplicity. She Is candid and
quiet, and is not given to going berserk over
things after the manner of some successful
women."
One of the most "glamorous women" of Miss
Winslow's acquaintance and list Is Lynn Fon
tanne, actress.
"Elizabeth Irving, head of the Little Red
Sehoolhouso, is an Interesting woman among
educators. She encourages freedom In school
and introduces modern methods."
Royalty was not Ignored by Miss Winslow,
cither, for sho named Princess Alexandra Km
pntkln an a woman who belongs on her "fasci
nating women" roster.
