County Officials
Investigate Tax
Value Complaints
Personal investigation of the com
plaints made to'the county hounl of
equalization on property assessments !
is bein mode by members of the 1
board and befure the board meets for
consideration of the objections the
members will hare had first hand in
formation as to valuations for taxa
tion purposes. County Clerk Walter
II. liillurd and County Coinmisinner
Walter J. Holland were out nil of
Thursday forenoon looking at farms
whose owners had filed objections.
The number of complaints this year
probably will not be as great ns last,
Assessor Stevens said Thursday. This
is surprising, the assessor pa id for the
reason there was a general belief the
recent rcvnluntin placed upon prop
erty by men from the state lax com
mission was not satisfactory to many
of the taxpayers.
U he equalization board will meet
Monday. Aug. IM, to begin its work
of equalizing valuations where com
plaints have been made.

Dwelling Damaged
Thursday By Fire
Ftre of unknown origin caused eon
s;uerabie damage at the home of Todd
Campbell. Thirl and High. Thursday
afternoon before being extincuished
hy the fire department. The furnish
ings were reported to have heen de
stroyed by the fire, which started at
- o'clock. The house was unoccupied
at the time the fire started.
H. A. MrComack. manager of the
Kugene Fruit tl rowers' association,
told Active club members that the
problem of cooperation or competition
with cooperative associations was one
that every btiMiiesK man nuot face
eventually when he nddressed the
group at their regular Thursday lun
cheon meeting.
He divided all cooperative move
ments into two groups, the coopera
tive producing and selling associa
tions, typified by the Kucene Fruit
ti rowers, and the cooperative buy
ing associations, prevalent mainly in
the east.
Though opponents of the coopera
tive producing associations have ad
vanced several arguments that seem
to mitigate against their success,
pointing out that the path of the
movement has been strewn with fail
ures and that they work a hardship
on their members, forcing them to
wait from two to twelve months for
their money after delivery of their
crops, MeCoruack declared that the
first objection was a thing of the past
nnd that the latter, while not solved
as yet. could hardly weigh against the
stability offered by the cooperative
association.
Thc history of the cooperative mar
keting movement, he explained, can
be compared with that of the automo
bile industry. The first cars were fail
ures and the first cooperatives were
failures. The motor manufacturers, by
continued experimentation, found the
correct formula for the production of
cars nnd the cooperative associa
tions have discovered equally effect
ive formulas for the production of
smooth and efficient organizations.
However, as in any type of business
venture, there must Iw a good man in
the driver's seat to insure success.
Jack Danner gave a fire-minute talk
on the petroleum industry, outlining
its history from the first known use
of crude oil in Itabylon up to the pres
ent time. Notice was given members
of the impending board meeting Aug
