returned for redemption.
Little difficulty was experienced ;
In forwarding ve envelopes to re
cipients, Stewsrt said. Out of the :
120 envelopes, all but nine have
been delivered. Two envelopes were
sent back to headquarters, one on
instructions from the San Francisco
headquarters, and the other for
veteran who had moved to another
city.
The first shipment arrived Mon
day, with some additions for the J
next few days. On Wednesday the i
first deliveries were made, and on .
the ssme day. veterans begsn to i
turn in bonds or redemption. For
four days the amounts turned in
were as follows: Wednesday, S000;
Thursday, $12,200; Friday, 18000;
Saturday (to noon), i50.
Although half of the bond total
has found its way back for redem
ption, it is believed that as a gen
ernl rule, Springfield veterans are
not "going overboard1 on the idea
of ready cash. Many veterans turned
in part nf their bonds for redernp
tion, preferring the remainder as an
investment. The chief motivation for
those who have turned in bonds for
redemption, according to interviews
with veterans, is the desire to make
payments on hOmeB or taxes.
Stewart expressed belief Saturday
that the undelivered bonds would be
accounted for shortly, since several
of the recipients could not leave
work long enough to sign for the
bonds. The postoffice will be open
for a short period Sunday morning
to accomodate these veterans,
